In the book the kids realize that Jimmy was a racist store owner, and quit working at his store. It connects to the earlier civil right movement against discrimination, racism, and more. This connects because part of the civil rights moment was because people were racist to African Americans. They wanted to be fairly treated, no discrimination, and equal rights.

This is a picture of the civil rights movement.

In this time almost all schools had been integrated and all of the races where allowed to be in the same school and have the same education. Some schools yet still struggled with problems with race. In The 1970´s Dress codes for school had ended and kids could where what they wanted to school. This connects to the story by giving more information about Miranda's school.
