A shift in mood occurs when Clarissa suddenly begins to mourn the life that she wished she had, and criticises her insignificance and physical appearance. 

The tone becomes very negative and bitter when thinking of Miss Kilman, out of jealousy that she may be a better mother to her daughter than clarissa
