A single note is the same note over and over that expresses melody, rhythm, and harmony. With just a single a note it gives us authenticity, since no one else has played a similar single note the very same way. Ratliff says "The single note could describe the world around someone changing rapidly, while he stays the same, a single note, over and over." Basically like a monotone. A single note can be used across all different genres of music. I do agree with Ratliff standpoint that at the point when a performer incidentally remains nearby to a single note, it may make the artist and the audience more alive. The authenticity and beauty of a single not can make a positive change in how the piece will end up. Ratliff closes the chapter saying "Some will find this goes without saying, but One Note is hard to listen to. It’s a series of rigorous self-inspections, for the musician and the listener." One example of a single note in Ratliff's playlist is a great song called "Furthest Thing" by Drake. In the middle of the song, Drake raps "You know I stay reminiscin' and makeup sex is tradition but you been missing girl you..." This line of the song was all done in one breath, all around B. He jumps into this line and raps it all in one breath at a quick pace. "Sunshine of your love" is also a great example of a single note being played at the beginning of the song. You can hear the same note being played throughout the song at different times. This song would be one that exemplifies a single note. You can see how the song acknowledges melody, rhythm, and harmony with the guitar in the song.
