Goal #1 Rhetorical Awareness

For this goal, I decided to link one of my favorite essays I have ever written. Although I am not very good with structural essays like a synthesis essay, this one was done with such strong appeals. There were some strong rhetorical appeals that I found within the three pieces we thoroughly compared. That is why I was so encouraged to find these appeals, because they related so much to my overall theme of my essay. My theme was the separation in humanity and culture, and how the three pieces we analyzed utilized so many rhetorical devices to show that forced separation. This essay influenced how I am going to rhetorically analyze everything I plan on reading and writing about. This essay was like one of the pillars in my future path as a writer, and my path for my career in general.

Goal #2 Critical thinking and Composing

For this goal, I added an image of an annotation matrix that we completed for Unit 1. It was our third assignment and I believe that it required a lot of critical thinking and composition. For this assignment I was required to annotate the different conventions and appeals that were in the three pieces I compared in the Borderlands synthesis essay. I had to uses different sources apart from the three pieces/sources I was already analyzing and annotating. This was the difficult part of this assignment, gathering secondary sources and relating them to the primary ones. However, I feel like that level of difficulty helped me grow as a writer. It made me really think about the sources in many different ways. I now know that annotation is an important part of constructing a piece of writing, like a synthesis essay.

For this goal I decided to added a google doc of images of my finished Story Map. This assignment was especially hard for me to complete, because it was one of the hardest moments of my life. There is a lot of depression and mental health issues in today's world, and I unfortunately had to see that personally with my eyes for the first time. I wanted to keep my overall theme of gentrification, but I did write a lot about mental health, and it also helped me deal with my mental health in a way. I loved adding my personal touch to this assignment, my own structure, my own images. All of these different conventions that we learned about in class motivated me to complete the assignment. Although it took a long time to finalize my details with my Story Map "El Mundo Que Cambio", it made a huge impact of what was going on in my personal life and how I choose to take different writing assignments and exercises in the future.

For this goal I decided to provide a link to my peer workshop and revision document for Unit 1. This was a revision of my Synthesis Essay. It was also a revision of peer review experience. Revision in my opinion, is a crucial part of writing assignments and assignments in general. It really helps you analyze what parts of your writing you need to improve and that is why this assignment was important for me. In addition to me revising my own pieces, I think its always important for peers to have an input in what you have to say in your assignments. The opinion of your peers and your own are entirely different, and take two different types of revision. Peer revision is also important for me, for them to see what I may not see. For them to correct mistakes that I may have thought were not mistakes. I definitely plan to revise my work in the future with the help of my peers again. This will influence my writing in the future.

Goal #5 Reflection

For this goal I decided to upload an image of papelito number 5. This assignment was a bit different, it was done in class which forced me to want to reflect on Unit 1. I reflected on my thoughts throughout the process of completing all of the assignments for the first unit. It was done a bit better because I freely wrote anything I wanted to add to this paper. There was no backspace, no undo, no delete. Everything I thought was messy or not was put on the paper. This is what reflection is all about, thinking about what you truly feel and putting it out there no matter the structure. I loved reflecting on experiences, writing difficulties, and my life as well. I look forward to reflecting on my assignments more in the future, whether or not I want to, it is always good to reflect.

This goal was specifically to find a sense of belonging somewhere. As a young woman from the Hispanic/Latinx community. It is hard finding a place where you can relate to and write about thoroughly with many memories stuck to it. Writing about a place with others' personal anecdotes held me in a place of connection within the places I was writing and reflecting about. I loved creating this journal because it helped me realize that advocacy is important. It is important to advocate for the things you care about. That is what this assignment made me practice. The interview especially helped me emotionally think about my sense of belonging. The interview I had with Angel Suarez made me realize that I am not the only one feeling that way about today's world and how it is constantly changing. I wrote a lot about change and how impactful it is, and that helped me reflect a lot about where I truly belong in life as a young woman. This kind of work definitely influences the way I write in the future and how I choose to look at my writing as well.

As a Hispanic young lady, there are many situations and places in life where I feel like I don’t belong. However, it feels nice to feel different now that I am barely realizing it. Back in high school I tried my hardest to look up to the older women and men graduating and going to prestigious schools, fancy dinners, with lots of luxury. Once I knew I couldn’t perfectly accomplish that, I knew I needed a change in my mindset. I needed a change in my values. As a growing Hispanic woman, I grew up differently. Learning was the luxury of my life. Good deeds and love were luxury for me, and for the people that I grew up around as a child. I realized I didn’t need the most costly objects to make me feel successful. The most important thing was to not only like me for who I was becoming, but love who I was blooming to be. Education is important to me, no matter what my situation is. I am always eager to learn something new whether it is studying, or on a daily basis. Throughout my second semester, I wanted to do some soul searching on whether I really wanted to continue this new journey of mine. I really wanted to reflect en mi mundo real. I would ask myself “Quien soy yo?” “Yo soy una niña que no pierde con lo que nació.”

My second semester of English definitely showed me a lot about my true culture, and why it is so significant in our world today. As I wrote my synthesis essay, on the separation of culture and humanity, and my story map en el mundo que sigue cambiando, I finally realized poco a poquito quién soy yo. I always thought that I just came from a family that drank chocolate abuelita en navidad. But there is more to my culture than I would have never expected. As I wrote about my home in papelito numero siete, I thought about what home really taught me and how I can grow from it as I explore more places that may be home to me in the future. It showed me the wonders of places I have till’ now which taught me a huge lesson about my writing. I can write what I want and when I want, and where I want to. It taught me advocacy for people who have homes that aren’t their homes anymore. And papelito número ocho, who do I want my honesty and words to go to? My audience is important, and who can truly advocate for, with just my writing.

My last papelito ever was the most important for me. A struggle in my life so major that it felt like my world was going to collapse. It is good to keep your personal life personal, but if you use it to connect with others, eso es una maravilla. When you pass through something difficult, there is fear that you may go through it again. However, I was taught throughout this semester, and throughout everything I wrote about the Borderlands, that no feeling is permanent. The word fear itself says it F-FACE E-EVERYTHING A-AND R-RISE. El mundo sigue cambiando, pero una persona no cambia…crece.
