E-portafolio
My goal as an artist and as a teacher is to constantly challenge the viewer and the receiver of my message, whether that message is through the canvas or my lecture. As a Mexican-American artist, born in Mexico and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, no only serve as a diverse candidate but I also bring a diversity of thought. Because of my own background in life and how I interact with students through the lens of that experience, I challenge students to think outside of their own box. The opportunity to inspire students who are also persons of color, as well as those who are not and show them that they too are able to be an artist and can dream this big, cannot be understated.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Socrates best illustrates my teaching philosophy when he says, “I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.” This quotation demonstrates my constructivist approach to education that places the emphasis squarely on the students to build their own understanding of the world through first-hand experience. Then, by reflection, they can compare the new experience to what they already know – thereby challenging their beliefs. I view teaching as a means of facilitating student discovery of their singular voice as an artist. Teaching and mentoring students not only helps them develop the necessary technical skills, but aids in their exploration of what is and what is not honest for them. I challenge students by asking questions, by eliciting curiosity from them through the artistic process; while simultaneously supporting their development in the technical skills of painting and drawing.

Challenges, Outcomes, and Expectations at Franklyn Square Elementary School.

Challenges:

It was quite a bit challenges from behavior to create an art program from scratch. The school had no have a formal art class for couple years in state they had a mix of resource art classes but it was never a formal art department or curricula to support a structural base to teach students formal art. Second challenge was it was no enough budget to support some of the arts in the school and finally the lack of proper furniture to have art classes at the school.

Expectation and Outcomes from me and my students:

I decide to create new curricula for what I have in the school material base and lesson planning that were realistic to cover the principal terms in the arts starting from teaching line, color, shape, texture and form and ending in sculptural forms. The second expectation from me was to talk to the staff and principal about new ideas and how we can bring an art department together with the few resource that we had, so we transform my class no into a resource anymore but it became elements of visual thinking in arts and it was part of student’s grades and curriculum of the school.

My students were expected to work in groups and treat the art classroom as a sanctuary, so they help clean and put together the classroom with their art and the more they learn the more the room start to look like an art class and less than just an empty room. Working in groups helped to develop social skills from the students, because at the beginning it was a lot of distrust and fight among students, but little by little they started to treat each other with respect and empathy for one and other until the point that they start to understand that the entire school is a big family and everyone needs to take care of each other’s no matter what. Finally, my students were asked to understand the basic principles of art so each project that they did need to include an element of art like line, color, etc., doing so they improve no only their art practice but they confidence to design and create better projects.

all these progress was made because of the support of parents, staff and most important the desire for students to have an art class at their school, because sometimes they did not know how to draw, write a poem, or build a sculpture but they never lack the desire to try and keep trying until it was perfect.

Finally, i would like to say special thanks of the staff from LTYC and to the principal of the school Miss Terry Patton because without their support none of this could happen
