Female Character

In our film opening we had to use a variety of techniques to portray our character in a certain way to address the audience. This is because our protagonist isn't a conventional lead character for the post-apocalyptic genre. We used a range of camera angles and sounds to illustrate the type of person she is. We did this because an audience may judge her as she isn't the conventional protagonist. This meant we had to do a massive amount of things in the the 2 minutes we had to persuade the audience of her authenticity.

Using a female character would attract audiences to watch the film as it is unconventional and a different style that normal is shown in a post-apocalyptic film. I think that it would attract the normal post-apocalyptic viewers as it would contain as similar story line to most films and it would contain a reasonable amount of violence and gore; as seen in the opening 2 minutes. Furthermore, we would want the film opening to attract a teenage audience as the lead role is a teenager. This means they can see how she manages to survive on her own and can compare how they would react to situations. Lastly, we wanted to adopt a more female audience as the lead is a female. They would be attracted as they could also relate to her and compare how they would react to situations.

We wanted to broaden the horizons and attract a much rider range of audiences rather than just the conventional male teen-adult.

The Plot

The plot of our film is also going to be an area that attracts audiences to watch our film. Generally people think that post-apocalyptic films are zombie films and don't think of anything else. Our film is very different to this as the plot is that a vaccination went wrong and starts killing everyone and turning some people into the living dead. Abbie the lead character is the cure for the outbreak as she has natural antibodies that killed the vaccination. Its her journey to survive and escape the federal government as they seek to kill her for the antidote. We named the film "Proliferation" as it means spreading of disease; in our case the killing vaccination. This would be an attraction point as it is different to many films.

Furthermore, the use of various camera angles and speed of editing engages the audience in the film attracting them to the action as we used these camera angles to make the audience feel like they are in the film with them; for example over the shoulder shots. Also the speed of editing creates tension as they worry for the girl about what is going to happen.

Mise en Scene

The mise en scene in our opening draws attention from the audience as they become curious why all the junk is there. We used this for this reason and this is because we wanted to show that because their was an apocalypse the character collects everything as it may have a use. The dirty and destroyed setting we used is also used to attract the audience it creates and enigma of why is she there? and what has happened? This makes the audience sense sadness and danger sympathy for the protagonist. Some specific props used were to attract a wider audience of men and gamers, by using violence and guns we achieved this.

Male Audience

As well as developing the traditional audience for the genre of film, we also had to aim the film at the conventional viewers, this being males teen-adult. WE needed to do this because this would be the majority of viewers watching. We achieved this by having the character use violence to protect her self using various weapons.
