The people that traveled down the California trail went for a couple reasons. One of the main reasons is gold. American emigrants and traders on the California Trail  tried to cross through the through the Sierra Nevada mountain range before the season’s first snows.}

They traveled west due to religion.  Joseph Smith founded the LDS religion and were not wanted in New York so they moved to Salt Lake. They didn't face many hardships. Many people traveled down this trail due to it following an ancient trading route first used by Native Americans. They didn’t have many hardships during this journey. They did have to go through hot deserts and dangerous rough mountains though.
