But, regardless of those things, it was a happy and awesome party. The tastes of the duke were awkward. He had really got an eye for detail for colors and effects. He ignored the simple fashion decorations. His plans were audacious and fiery, and his ideas glowed with a barbarian brightness. There are who would say he was crazy. His followers believed he was not. It was necessary to hear and see and touch him to be sure he was not.

In that apartment, there was also a massive ebony clock mounted on the western wall. Its pendulum swung back and forth with a dull, heavy, repetitive clang. When the minute hand completed its circuit around the clock's face and the hour was about to strike, a distinct and loud musical sound emanated from the clock's brass mechanisms. However, the note and emphasis of this sound were so peculiar that the musicians in the orchestra paused momentarily during their performance to listen to it. Consequently, the dancers had to halt their movements, causing a brief disruption among the lively crowd. As the chimes of the clock rang out, even the liveliest individuals grew pale, and the older, more composed attendees ran their hands across their foreheads, appearing lost in bewildered contemplation. But once the echoes had completely faded, a light laughter spread through the assembly. The musicians exchanged glances and smiled, recognizing their own nervousness and foolishness. They made whispered promises to one another that the next time the clock chimed, they would not let it affect them similarly. However, after sixty minutes had passed (equivalent to three thousand and six hundred seconds of fleeting time), the clock chimed again, and once more, the same disruption, trembling, and introspection ensued.

Diana, Isadora, Josiane, Paôla e Ritchely

The second chamber was purple in its ornaments and tapestries, and here the panes were purple. The third was green throughout, and so were the casements. The fourth was furnished and lighted with orange — the fifth with white — the sixth with violet. The seventh apartment was closely covered in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy folds upon a carpet of the same material and color. But, in this chamber only, the color of the windows failed to correspond with the decorations. The window glasses here were scarlet — a deep blood color. Now in no one of the seven apartments was there any lamp or candelabrum, among the profusion of golden ornaments that lay scattered here and there or falling from the roof. There was no light of any kind emanating from lamp or candle within the suite of chambers. But in the corridors that followed the suite, there stood, opposite to each window, a heavy tripod, holding a brazier of fire that projected its rays through the tinted glass and so lively illumined the room. And so were produced a multitude of exaggerated and fantastic appearances. But in the western or black chamber the effect of the fire-light that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood-tinted panes, was terrible in the extreme, and produced so wild a look upon the countenances of those who entered, that there were few of the company bold enough to set foot within its surroundings at all.

He had directed, in great part, the moveable ornaments of the seven chambers, upon occasion of this great fête, and it was his own guiding taste which had given character to the costumes of the masqueraders. Be sure they were grotesque. There were much glare and glitter and piquancy and phantasm — much of what has been since seen in “Hernani.” There were arabesque figures with inappropriate limbs and appointments. There were delirious fancies such as the madman fashions. There was much of the beautiful, much of the wanton, much of the bizarre, something of the terrible, and not a little of that which might have excited disgust. Back and forth in the seven chambers there stalked, in fact, a large group of dreams. And these, the dreams — twisted in and about, taking colors from the rooms, and causing the wild music of the orchestra to seem as the echo of their steps. And, immediately, there strikes the ebony clock which stands in the hall of the velvet. And then, momently, all is still, and all is silent except the voice of the clock. The dreams are stiff-frozen as they stand. But the echoes of the bell die away — they have remained for instant — and a light, half shy laughter floats after them as they gone. And now again the music grows up, and the dreams live, and twist to and back and forth more happily than ever, taking colors from the many-tinted windows through which stream the light from the tripods. But to the chamber which stays western of the seven there are now none of the maskers who venture; for the night is falling away; and there flows a reddish light through the blood-colored panes; and the blackness of the sable drapery appals; and to him whose foot falls upon the sable carpet, there comes from the near clock of ebony a quiet sound more emphatic than any which reaches their ears who enjoys in the more remote cheer of the other apartments.

It was about the fifth or sixth month of this reclusion and the Prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends with a masquerade party. It was a voluptuous scene, a magnificent event like no one seen before.

But first let me tell of the rooms in which it was held. There were seven — an imperial suite. In many palaces, however, these suites form a long and straight view, while the folding doors slide back nearly to the walls, so the view of the whole extension in not impeded. But not in this palace. It will be expected from a duke with peculiar taste, right? The apartments were so irregularly disposed that the vision embraced nothing more than one at a time. There was a sharp turn at every twenty or thirty meters, and at each turn, a new movie- like effect. To the right and left, in the middle of each wall, a tall and narrow gothic window looked out before the curves going on. These windows were of a kind of glass whose color varied in accordance with prevailing decorations colors of the chamber into which it opened. That at the eastern extremity was hung, for example, in blue — and vividly blue were its windows.

And the carouse went whirlingly on, until at length there commenced the sounding of night upon the timepiece. And also the music desisted , as I've told; and the progressions of the waltzers were quieted; and there was an uneasy conclusion of all effects as ahead.
But now, there were twelve strokes to be sounded by the bell of the timepiece; and therefore it happed, maybe, that further of study crept, with further of time, into the contemplations of the thoughtful among those who birled .
And therefore too, it happed, maybe, that before the last echoes of the last chime had hugely sunk into silence, there were numerous individualities in the crowd who had set up rest to come apprehensive of the presence of a masked figure which had arrested the attention of no single existent ahead.
And the scuttlebutt of this new presence having spread itself whisperingly around, there arose at length from the whole company a buzz, or murmur, suggestive of deprecation and surprise — also, eventually, of terror, of horror, and of nausea.

The "Red Death" had long devastated the country. No pest had been ever so fatal, or so horrifying. Blood was its main mark and its seal - the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then: blood. Abundant blood! The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest mark which shut him out from the sympathy and help of his equal. And the whole convulsion progress and termination of the disease were the incidents of half an hour.

When his dominions were half depopulated, he called a thousand friends from among the knights and ladies of his court. Then, they retired to the isolation in one of his castellated abbeys. They resolved to isolate themselves in the frenzy inside and ignore the impulses of desperation outside. The abbey was richly provided. With these precautions, the courtiers might challenge the contamination. The external world could take care of itself. In the meantime, it would be a lost of time lamenting or thinking about it.
