Summary:

Growing up in the shadow of my sister Antigone, I always believed in the importance of following the laws of our land. When Creon, our king and uncle, decreed that our brother Polynices should not be buried, I was torn. I knew the dangers of defying such an order, but my sister's unwavering determination made me question my own beliefs. While I initially hesitated, fearing the wrath of Creon and the consequences of rebellion, my love for my family ultimately led me to stand by Antigone. This autobiography recounts my journey through these tumultuous times, the internal conflicts I faced, and the strength I found in the end. Though I may not have been as bold as Antigone, my story is one of quiet resilience and deep familial loyalty.

This project focuses on designing a book jacket for an autobiography of Ismene, a character from Sophocles' Antigone. The objective is to convey Ismene’s perspective on the events of the play, shedding light on her motivations, internal conflicts, and personal growth.

The title, In the Shadows of Defiance, was chosen to reflect Ismene’s role in the story. While Antigone is bold and openly rebellious, Ismene remains in the background, torn between fear and loyalty. The title captures her inner turmoil and the impact of Antigone’s defiance on her own decisions.

The cover image of a delicate flower symbolizes Ismene’s cautious and gentle nature. It represents both her fragility and quiet strength, reinforcing her role as a character who hesitates yet remains deeply devoted. Selected quotes provide an external lens on Ismene, emphasizing her cautious disposition, internal struggles, and unwavering loyalty. These quotes serve as reflective reviews, offering insight into her personality and choices.

The "About the Author" section delves into Ismene’s background, detailing her life in Thebes and the weight of her family’s cursed legacy. It highlights her obedience, fears, and deep love for her family while presenting her as a resilient and sympathetic figure.

The chosen image represents my vision of Ismene, capturing her gentle nature and the complexity of her relationship with Antigone. This project allowed me to explore Ismene’s character in depth, considering her struggles, development, and the influences that shape her actions. Every element of the book jacket—the title, imagery, and selected passages—was intentionally chosen to reflect Ismene’s layered personality and evolving journey. By presenting her side of the story, I aimed to highlight the quiet strength and steadfast loyalty that define her character.
