At one point in the story Miranda's Mom told her she didn't want her going in there. She didn't say why, but I think she didn't want Miranda's mood to get worse then it already was. In a way, the canned food could control emotions. A fuller pantry with a good amount of food could soothe worries and promise hope. I think that the ID badge connects to our world in several ways. It represents power, which for example can be achieved by wealth. Just like the ID badge, you can either be born into wealth, work towards wealth, or simply don't have any access to it. Wealth is not the only thing that gives you power, and is therefore represented by the ID badge. After the asteroid hits the moon, Alex, Bri and Julie lose contact with their parents. Even though after months of waiting, they still leave a note for their parents that they moved to a higher floor. Especially Bri, even after Alex and Julie confirmed that their parents were most likely to be dead, she still went down to the basement and left another note that cost her life.
