Add a symbol you can track through your series. Then begin to add quotes from the text that show where the symbol is used.

Canned Food

With the winters coming and Miranda's Mother's garden dead, the family's only source of food is the cans they have stored in the pantry. At one point in the story Miranda's Mom told her she didn't want her going in there. She didn't say why, but I think she didn't want Miranda's mood to get worse then it already was. In a way, the canned food could control emotions. A fuller pantry with a good amount of food could soothe worries and promise hope. A emptier pantry could make anyone's nerves go up, worrying about how they'll make it through the winter, who to save and give the most food to, and even could persuade someone to give up.

In the book, the ID badge gives you respect and power. I think that the ID badge connects to our world in several ways. It represents power, which for example can be achieved by wealth. Just like the ID badge, you can either be born into wealth, work towards wealth, or simply don't have any access to it. Wealth is not the only thing that gives you power, and is therefore represented by the ID badge. Other examples are gender and race.

The moon represents uncertainty. The moon in this series it the root of all of their problems. It caused many hardships that are affecting the characters lives. And even its appearance is just unnatural and unfamiliar. Overall its a reminder that everything has gone wrong.

Miranda, Matt, and Jonny are trying to learn how to ski in order to get to town and/or the lake. As they are learning, they keep falling, getting themselves cold and wet. This is really similar to their general situation. They keep messing up and learning from their mistakes how to survive their new life. But this could also be connected to the real world. They teach us to never give up, even if we fall down.

The situation was so desperate before they received the passes from Chris's father, Mr. Flynn. They only eat one meal a day, with food running short after Briana came back from the convoy. The passes represent hope, it gives them access to the safe town, where they will be considered "safe". It encourages the Morales to survive the harsh "corpse land" and finally make it to Lisa and Hal.

Note

This note refers to the note Alex and Briana left for their parents that never came. After the asteroid hits the moon, Alex, Bri and Julie lose contact with their parents. Even though after months of waiting, they still leave a note for their parents that they moved to a higher floor. Especially Bri, even after Alex and Julie confirmed that their parents were most likely to be dead, she still went down to the basement and left another note that cost her life. It's the sign of survival and hope that they could make it out of here and live, not only their parents but themselves too.
