There has been changes from how it is made to how it is prepared or cooked. We also know that the way it is cultivated has changes from being organic, and being made from GMOs or other unethical ways.

At first glance, the topic of popcorn is seemingly innocent and any sort of ethical ideas or debates of such topic seems to be outlandish at best. However, after delving further it became apparent that in years past a particular ingredient, diacetyl, has come under fire. Present in microwave popcorn, this additive was responsible for the over the top buttery flavor. However, it was also responsible for multiple cases of ‘popcorn lung’ in popcorn factory workers, consumers, and those exposed to the vapors. After several lawsuits the additive was removed and new substitutes took its place. The substitutes are no better/healthier than the initial ingredient and are still present in current microwavable popcorn. This begs the question of why use an additive at all? Isn’t there a healthier alternative? Is there a means by which we can further regulate the substances used not only in popcorn but other foods? What other things are we ingesting that are harmful to our bodies? For me this research further solidifies not only my thinking that air-popped is substantially healthier but also my dislike for popcorn in general.

The endosperm inside the hull has a 14-20% moisture content, which is needed to “pop” effectively. Some popcorn is sweet (kettle corn) salty (maybe it has your favorite flavoring salt), and buttery (movie theater). Some people like it with butter while others eat it plain; no salt, no butter, or any combination thereof. It's important to consider another person's perspective because everyone has different health considerations. A person who eats popcorn without butter might be vegan, or a person who eats popcorn without salt might have high blood pressure. When one looks at popcorn and its consumers through a different lens, one can gain understanding about an individual's choices, even broaden their own perspective on eating popcorn. For example, maybe they've never tried popcorn with M&Ms--truly a choice worth experiencing!

Popcorn balls (popped kernels stuck together with a sugary "glue") were hugely popular around the turn of the 20th century, but their popularity has since waned. Popcorn balls are still served in some places as a traditional Halloween treat. Cracker Jack is a popular, commercially produced candy that consists of peanuts mixed in with caremel-covered popcorn. Kettle corn is a variation of normal popcorn, cooked with white sugar and salt, traditionally in a large copper kettle. Once reserved for specialty shops and county fairs, kettle corn has recently become popular, especially in the microwave popcorn market. The popcorn maker is a relatively new home appliance, and its popularity is increasing because it offers the opportunity to add flavors of the consumer's own choice and to choose healthy-eating popcorn styles I wonder how popcorn will change in the future?

We can compare health and enjoyment opinions for dentists, health experts/nutritionists, parents, and snackers. We can explore different preferences of flavorings and toppings, hopefully with why. Ideally, we might find trends or patterns in those preferences. Also, we can consider opinions from people like workers who clean movie theaters. In addition, when creative writing, we can go out of the box to think about how microwaves feel about the volatile popping job... In ELAR, we can investigate text that we read and concepts to write about, and we need to delve into point of view per standards.

Popcorn can be in different flavors and different uses in different culture. Some popcorn like sweet popcorn can have significance for different people because of familial holiday ties. Popcorn can also be useful as a healthy snack for those trying to lose weight, and have a different significance for them. Popcorn also can be used for movie goers and have that meaning.

There are three main types of corn kernels, but only one type produces popcorn. The design of the popcorn kernels is what allows it to pop. Inside each kernel there is a seed for a new corn plant, water, and starch (food for the seed during germination) moisture turns to steam and pops the kernel. When the kernel is heated the water undergoes a phase change and turns into steam which increases the pressure inside the kernel. With increased pressure the kernel explodes and turns itself inside out.
