General William S. Rosecrans part of the Union gained command of the Ohio army, and the Department of Cumberland in October 1862. The whole thing together was renamed the army of the Cumberland. In 1863 William led his army against Braxton Bragg's army of Tennessee. In the aftermath of the two armies clashing, Bragg fell back onto Chatanooga, a Tennessee rail hub.

The Union took a pretty hard hit on the right line from the Confederates. Though the Union was able to withdraw from the battle successfully in the darkness of night, they still suffered a huge defeat in Chattanooga. Chattanooga became one of the biggest defeats the Union has ever suffered throughout the whole entire Civil War.

Chattanooga

Braxton withdrew his army into Georgia in the south. But now with the Cumberland army scattered and having to lay back on supplies, this was the perfect time for Braxton's army to strike. On the 17th of september 1863. Bragg pushed General William to fall back on positions close to the West Chikamauga creek. The fighting began on the 19th close to Jay Mills. The Confederates did constant attacks to the left flank. This pushed General William to send out more troops to the left flank and less on the right. In the late morning Bragg launched a flurry of attacks on the right flank which took out the right flank of the Union army and forced them to retreat to northwest in the direction of McFarland's Gap. The left flank of the Union was ran by George H. Thomas who withdrew the left flank of the army.

Buffington

The battle of Buffington took place in Portland Ohio on July 19 1863.

The Union General Edward Hobinson had 3,000 soldiers and the Confederate General John H. Morgan had 1,800 soldiers.
