The storied life of Christopher D. Brown begins with his grandfather. He started the journey on which we see today. James Brown Sr. was a principle in a southern town of Millen, Georgia. He was the first black principle of the county of desegregated high school. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 helped shape this. This foundation of education, being strong willed in a racist environment, and focus on strong family ties is what laid the foundation for Christopher’s Father and what his father taught him in turn. This social identity to being well educated is the path to success will constantly be replayed over and over throughout this timeline.

In the 2nd grade Christopher D. Brown is held back because he could not read at the level needed to progress. He is put in special needs class next year diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. This is a core feature in his life where he finds out early that he will struggle with his disciplinary literacies the rest of his life. Reading, writing, and understanding content would be very difficult for him moving forward. This barrier carried many obstacles for him to overcome.

On this day I was sitting in my desk and a teacher from across hall came running in and told our teacher to change the channel. That day, I witnessed the terrorist attack in New York live. For all the victims I pray for them and wish their families well. As for impact on Christopher life, schools became more safe and Patriot Act was instilled and national security became more aware.

When Chris learned of his ability to excel in sports it changed his view of disciplinary literacy skills dramatically. Now with a purpose and focus to stay in sports he had to achieve well in his classes to pursue his goals of being an athlete. Being in sports helped his science, reading and comprehension, and math skills beyond his conception. He received tutoring and help which he then focused his preferred skills in history and math which he still uses today. The pure fact that he was totally focused on sports and only classes kept him out of trouble and focused on his education and future life. Being active kept his mind and body achieving new goals.

With all the barriers from racism he received from teachers, identity with being inadequate from learning disabilities, from his social background from his parents, to his mental barriers from reading and writing, he has accomplished more than he was told. From graduating high school. To getting a bachelor’s degree. To getting into a master program. Christopher D. brown will continue to strive and struggle at his own pace. But his identity is to be a born fighter and he will never give up.

Elementary and Middle school were the toughest chapters in disciplinary literacy for Christopher Brown. Being held back and then having trouble reading was just the beginning. Christopher attended special needs courses till middle school. During his 6th grade year his teacher called him a “nigger” and he had a love hate relationship with educators. One assignment we were to give our dreams of what we wanted to be, and she told him he was not smart enough to become an astronaut. This brought many barriers to education for him. Science, Math, and reading were real struggles and the connections to being dumb and racism make education seem like a lost cause.

With my background, I will use my knowledge of my preferred disciplinary literacies and experiences to help all my students. When students are struggling, I will help them day by day to achieve their goals. When students need more help, I will offer them more access and a calm and helpful explanations. When my students need to thrive, I will provide them with challenging assessments and assignments to push them. My experiences have helping me with showing my students no matter where you come from or what people think of you, you can have success. I was a struggling reading, writing, science as a student but I pushed through and now have proficiencies in all disciplinary literacies as such in reading and writing and historical manners which will help me be a successful educator in my history, economics and American government classes.
