It also gives many examples of how math is everywhere in our world from music to nature to pizza and beyond. I would use this book at the beginning of the year when I am doing diagnostic assessment surveys of the students’ ideas and attitudes about math. I have three journal prompts that I use to better understand what kinds of ideas and feelings they have about math. You can use the slides I created if you are interested.</div><div><a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1n3DsWQ1Me-5Bry65y7nUY7RoEGCdhjOQcOZVA-o-O2Y/edit?usp=sharing">Math Identity Journal Prompts</a></div><div>There are a couple of quotes about math in the book so I have also used this book as a springboard to an activity that invites students to create memes about math. How many tables do you need for the 32 guests?), Grade 6 ratios (32 guests, 96 meatballs - 1:3 ratio of people : meatballs)</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Connections:</strong> This book presents a problem to students in a funny but accessible and potentially familiar way. I'm sure many of our students have witnessed at home some of the stress that goes into planning a big family meal! The book could also provide a good extension activity where the teacher provides students with a different number of guests and meal options, and they would figure out the different seating and food possibilities for each group. </p>]]></description>

Before you start, I recommend having place value charts handy for students, as we get into large numbers. As you read, you can pause with students and work on a classroom table of values chart on an anchor chart, or have students create them on whiteboards in small groups. I will usually have students “lock in” an answer at the early stages of the pattern being introduced. It is fun to see the guesses students had before they realize how much rice is given (and how much rice is in a handful, bowlful etc). You can further talk about the story and assess students understanding of the different types of growth we see in tables of values, and extend it further by graphing the data. You could also have students create the pattern rule and then find a specific day and how much rice she would receive.</p>]]></description>

Students can record the number of hippos versus time in a simple table of values and then transfer the data to a bar graph (or graph of choice). The data set can be used to calculate mean, median, and mode, and to extend the task, data points can be removed or altered so students can see how missing or changed values impact their mean/median/mode. Lastly, students can also compare two different representations of the same data (table vs graph) and explain which is more useful for answering specific questions or which type of data representation they prefer and why.</p>]]></description>

I used it the one and only time I taught Grade 3. It's a great intro to division. After reading the story, you could have students do all sorts of similar problems with various materials/collections (including cookies).          <description><![CDATA[<p>I don't read this book from start to finish -- there are several concepts touched on (equivalence, comparing, adding, determining the lowest common denominator, etc.) -- I use it more as <em>inspiration </em>to teach 4's and 5's about <strong>equivalent fractions</strong>. I project a read aloud version on Youtube so that everyone can see. I skip over the first few pages until we get to the equivalent fraction part. I ask the kids to show the fractions in different ways (using their individual bars) -- first showing half, then a third, just like the book does. We also talk about how we could use paper folding/fraction strips or number lines to show the same equivalent fractions, and we try some of those. </p><p><br/></p><p>Big Idea (that I focus on): fractions can represent the same amount even if they look different</p><p><br/></p><p>Expectation (Grade 5) 1.3 - represent equivalent fractions from halves to twelfths, including improper fractions and mixed numbers, using appropriate tools, in various contexts</p>]]></description>
