Explain the concept of the universal precaution and what is needed when caring for a wound. Be specific/give details!

Universal precautions mean treating all blood and body fluids as if they are infected. When caring for a wound, wear gloves, wash hands, and use clean supplies to avoid spreading germs.

Explain, in detail, the proper way to remove gloves.

Pinch the outside of one glove near the wrist and pull it off, holding it in your gloved hand. Then slide two fingers under the wrist of the remaining glove, peel it off over the first glove, and throw both away safely.

Explain how to recognize an infection in a wound. Provide a picture of an infected wound. How do you treat an infected wound?

Signs of infection include redness, swelling, warmth, pus, pain, and sometimes fever. Clean the wound, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover it with a clean bandage—see a doctor if it doesn’t improve.

Explain, step by step, how to properly clean and dress a wound to prevent infection. Be sure to include all necessary supplies.

Wash hands and put on gloves. Rinse the wound with clean water, use mild soap if needed, pat dry, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover with sterile gauze or a bandage. Replace with clean supplies as needed.

Describe the correct procedure for disposing of contaminated materials (such as used gloves, bandages, or gauze) after wound care. Why is this important?

Place used gloves, bandages, or gauze in a plastic bag or biohazard container before throwing them away. This prevents spreading germs or infections to others.

Explain when and why handwashing is required before and after wound care. What are the proper steps to ensure hands are thoroughly cleaned?

Wash hands before to avoid introducing germs and after to remove any bacteria. Use warm water and soap, scrub for 20 seconds (including under nails), rinse, and dry with a clean towel.

Describe the signs and symptoms of excessive bleeding from a wound. What immediate steps should you take to control the bleeding?

If blood soaks through bandages or won’t stop after 10 minutes, it’s excessive. Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or bandage, keep the wound raised, and call for medical help if it doesn’t stop.

Explain the importance of keeping a wound covered. How often should a dressing be changed, and what factors determine this?

A covered wound stays clean, moist, and heals faster while blocking germs. Change the dressing once or twice a day, or sooner if it gets wet or dirty.
