In my country, teachers do not visit students homes. That kind of visits are done by the social workrs or schoool educators, once any problem is detected with a specific child. Even if a teacher wanted to do it, there is no legal back-up neither a schedule.

We don't have any legal background for such visits in Greece either. However, if that was possible, my main concern would be whether parents would be welcoming or if they would feel threatened (especially in cases that are problems with the students behaviour).

I make several home visits. Specialy with roma families. But I am a educational mediator and I think that my work could not happen without this visits.
I tell families what is being done at school, I give them information they need to know, we draw up joint strategies...I am usually welcomed and families are gratefull for the visit.

We have not a similar project in our school.
There are social workers. The situation are so difficult that somethimes it is better that people outside school try to face with them and they talk us after how to work as better as possibile on children.

I often do home visits to parents. I try to do so at the beginning of the school year for the first time where we just talk with parents and drink coffee or tea. We reschedule for home visit when I will have a concrete first view of their child.

In my school teachers are not allowed to visit the students' homes. The only entities that can do this are social workers. When the teacher wants to know more about the family environment, he / she goes to the social security that deals with the families. This is the first time I have contacted the home visits of teachers that I find quite useful.

it is not common in high schools in Italy to make home visits to the parents of my students, if they did not know already, it would certainly be very educational to enter the environment where the kids live, but many are the parents who work and are not at home, so it would also be difficult to make visits.

In Portugal, teachers can not make home visits to their students and their families. In cases duly identified, the school can signal a child and family to the body of the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth that will act, through identification and diagnosis, and there may be home visits of its technicians. This body has in its composition different strands of action among which the education of the child at risk.

Unfortunately there's no legal background for home visits in Greece and we are by no means authorised to take such kind of initiatives. This is the job of social workers or psychologists. Should things change in this field , my primary concern would be to make myself acceptable and welcome in these home visits if I wish to make a difference in my relationship with the parents.

I never conducted a home visit to the parents of my students. I do not have hours of work for it or a legal basis to go home to the students. However in my school there are 2 social assistants who do this work, who go to the homes of students with problems in school, to solve the situation with their parents. If I need to contact a parent who does not show up at school or is unreachable, I talk to one of the social workers and explain the problem and she goes student's home and tries to resolve the situation.

I have never conducted home visit of my Greek students but I did it with my refugee students. I visited their tents and caravans inside the camps. In Serbia, some 10 years ago, home visits by 'class' teacher were mandatory, because that teacher was responsible for one class (parents meetings, documents, students' behaviour, non-attendance, etc.). Now that practice is abandoned. It is not forbidden officially, but would be considered extremely unprofessional. It would even be compromising for the teacher - others might suspect the teacher gives some privileges to that/those students.
I myself have never thought of paying a home visit but I think it is a good way to get to know social and emotional status of students, get them to know better. The line is very thin - how to be friendly with parents and stay professional.

I am working at a private school. As far as I know home visits are something not allowed or customary... Nevertheless... for quite some years now I face the sadly phenomenon of parents death. I feel extremely sorry for my students and their left parent... I try to get in touch with them, I call them or as soon as they visit school I try to comfort them. I go to the funeral to pay my respect and show to my students, that I feel their pain. Later I tell them that I am there for them... to make home visits is something that I find very useful to teachers-parents-students relationship... But I dont know if my school would approve it...

I have never conducted home visits myself, but I believe they could prove to be very beneficial. When meeting the teacher and talking in the “comfort zone” of their house, parents are more likely to express their concerns and let the teacher enter into their lives, showing trust. It could be an opportunity for both sides to meet, talk and collaborate for the benefit of the child. Especially with low-performing students, home visits could help to put a human face to a name and could turn finger pointing into teamwork and understanding. Through home visits teachers could have a better understanding of the child’s environment and of how that environment might impact the child’s learning in the classroom. Children, on the other hand, would find it very positive when their parents and teachers meet. It could be very reassuring for them to know that their teacher understands their home situation and that what they do in the classroom is supported by their parents. Eventually, when parents are more familiar with their child’s teacher, they are more likely to become involved with their child’s learning, as well as, school activities and volunteering.

We have a pastoral team who visit homes of families who are struggling regularly and it helps us to show that we care and to inform staff what things are like at home for specific children who may be struggling. I have been involved in a number of visits and i have found them useful for two reasons. One, as mentioned above relates to me appreciating how specific children are living and how I can support those children in school with colleagues. Two, I am showing parents my commitment to their family by visiting them where they feel most comfortable. As i have mentioned before, many of our parents have negative memories of school so by us enabling them to feel more comfortable they are willing to open up and share real concerns.

I never have done home visits. But if I conducted a home visit myself my biggest concern was regarding to communication. As it was referred all over this course, it’s important to see each parent as an individual. So, when I went to this parents’ house and after understanding their social/economic/religious/cultural background I would have to be caring, professional and open. I also believe that I should be honest, in order to develop parents trust, because trust develops when people are honest and open with each other and clear about expectations and boundaries. I could also do an action plan with them, so they could help kids during the learning process.

I have never conducted home visits myself as the current legislation in Greece does not suggest it as a means of communication between school and parents. If I had to conduct a home visit, I would rather do it with a social worker. My teacher training has not to do with how to conduct home visits, whereas a social worker’s training includes this issue. Therefore I believe that a home visit of mine with a social worker would be more effective.

I have to confess this was an unknown concept for me. Here, it is not customary to go to students' homes, nor is there a legal basis to do it. This is something that only happens if the school thinks the child is at risk or that the family needs some support. Only then do the social workers step in. In other cases, there are education mediators that establish these connections.

If I had to do such visits my greatest concern would probably be the lack of motivation of some parents to get involved in the programme. I believe that this “immersion” in the families’ environment would have to be well planned and executed. Of course that such programme would only be possible in my country if there was a reorganization in the educational system and in the teachers’ schedules

I appreciate a lot this project. This way school become more friendly and parents start to collaborate and to trust in school. As the mother in the video says: “It’s great!”.

In Italy we have not specific programs for home school visits. Anyway I had the opportunity to do this experience as a teacher for special needs students. Once I went to my students’ home to help him to start to use the computer he had just bought. All the family was really excited for my visit! Last summer I went to visit one my student during the holidays because she had just finished the secondary middle school and she needed some help to choose in the best way her future school. Also in this case her family was very happy because in Italy it’s unusual.

I believe that in Portugal it is not very common for teachers to visit their student’s home, except in the case of tutors or whenever is necessary to provide home support to students with very serious illnesses that prevent them from attending school.
I never visited my students' house. But I believe that I would be more comfortable to visit my students' home if there is a legal framework such as what is happening in Ireland (HSCL) or integrated into a project of the school itself.

Unfortunately, the home visits in Greece is something unknown, except some cases where it's difficult for children to attend at school (because of an accident) and teachers have to teach them at home. Psychologists and social workers have the role for home visits. The only I can accept is an invitation from parents to have a talk about children' progress.

In Portugal teachers aren't used to do home visits. I was asked once to do it, but it was a particular situation. The family was being followed by so many professional supporters, and there were so many strange persons entering that family's house, that I was asked, as the student's school tutor to do the visits and report the situation monthly. I hated doing it because I felt like a spy. So, In my opinion home visits made by teachers aren't for me and aren't for my culture. Visiting a home is something private. Not everyone enters my home, why should I do that? I think that there are other ways of creating bounds. School is the common ground where family and teachers are connected by the student. Doesn't visiting a student's house allows the student to visit my own house?

In Romania to amke visits at students home is a common action. The teachers councilers are going to their students home every 4 years when they recive a new class, for 4 years.
I visited the houses of my students, I talked with parents, I applied questionnaires to find out new things about childrens and parents in order to know how to actiona and to chose my strategy of working with them, students and parents too.

In Portugal, home visits have to be done by social services in specific cases that the teacher or school has to point out. We would be on our own and without protection. That is why it is not common. I don’t do home visits in difficult cases. However, when difficult parents do not let a student take part in a study visit, I visit the home to convince them.

In my country there are no such organized projects, although I have in the past i have made some visits to students home when there was some problems and according to specialist advise and by the acceptance of the school headmaster and the school advisor. The results were mixed. I think that something like that should be legally guaranteed by the State, and of course all parents should accept to participate in such projects.

The US "Parent Teacher Home Visit" project is extremely interesting, I like the positive energy that has been invested. Obviously, they are professionals with a soul. I'm wondering about the challenges they encountered. In Serbia there is something similar to the Irish Home School Community Liaison scheme, but it is carried out by social workers, not teachers. The visit is considered unprofessional intimacy with the family.

In Italy, the insiders are not silly going to the students' homes except in exceptional cases approved by the College of Teachers and authorized by the Head of Institute. This is the case for long-term students who expect teachers to go home for a number of hours to do their homework; but now with the communication via Skype these already very rare activities, soo further diminished.
I happened to go home to some pupils but I did not like the impact: we were all very embarrassed and wanted a lot for the ice.

In my country I think that there is currently no tradition of teachers making visits to their students' homes, in order to involve their parents in school learning. Some schools currently have technicians, namely social service or social educators who often travel to students' homes. Dislocations are not related to the development of school / curricular learning but are rather realized when pupils often do not attend school and are in compulsory education (up to 18 years of age) or are families at the level of parental educational practices.

I've already done home visits. Often to obtain consent and signing of student intervention proposals. Other times in projects, for example each week a caretaker taught the students to cook. Or to see Christmas decorations, farmhouses etc ...
For this to be successful, it must be well explained, planned and be free option of the parents to receive for a simple conversation or to participate in a project with the group that moves to the home or to the place of work of the parents

In Italian system we are not allowed to home visit and usually too personal relationships are not well seen. Actually I think that doing them is so far away from our cultural perception of school/family relationship that it would be not possible also suggest to begin doing this. otherwise I think that other way to have parents involved would be possible especially if related to cultural events or the possibility to access their children activities at school.

The greek ministry of education does not support such visits unless the child is seriously sick where a teacher is needed to help the kid catch up with the others.I wouldn't pay a visit to one of my pupils' home uninvited or without the legal permission of the ministry.I am not also convinced that such visits are always on the kid's benefit

I have been to pupils houses on two or three ocasions when I worked in a rural area. One time I did this because the grandmother of this girl in my class had died in an accident and she wasn't coping well with it. Her mum had rang and asked if she could have school asignments for her to do at home as she was going to miss school for a few days. I also met other families at home when I was coaching the school's basketball team because we had games on Saturdays and I would drive the school van and pick some pupils at their homes and drive them back after the games .
At my current school in Lisbon we relly on the social assistant to connect more closely to families, it would not be seen positively for teachers to go to their homes and it might even be dangerous.

I have visited some students but they were ill and couldn't come to school. Parents were happy that I could come and teach their child at home. The only thing concerns that you have to find extra time for the visit.

In my particular case, I never conducted a home visit and I think I never will, due to the kind of service I provide (psychologist). But even considering teachers I must disagree with that approach.

In Portugal we have other professionals and services to do that. And we must keep in mind that there are families which do not appreciate this action. Sometimes they even consider it as an intrusion in a restricted and private context - family. We can improve and increase communication and relationship between school and parents without home visits.

We aren't used to home visits in Portugal. In rural areas where people invite each other home, teachers regularly do home visits. In urban areas there are special multidisciplinary teams to do that, in case of early school leaving, or when parents seem to be negligent, in case of very bad behavior, bullying, a.s.o. Parents aren't open to such practices, they'd rather consider them invasive. It's their territory!
I wouldn't be comfortable myself doing a home visit. It could even be dangerous. In my opinion, the context should be carefully analyzed before planning a home visit. Portugal's mentality doesn't accept this approach very well and, as a Portuguese, I can understand. I wouldn't like to have my children's teachers at home. Our home is our place.
There's also the fact that, according to administrative policies, teachers don't have time for these actions. Usually we do projects with our students and their parents, but always pro bono and during our personal time.

In Portugal, we don`t do these home visits. Some years ago I visited a family with economical problems to deliver a basket with food. It was a great experience indeed. However in some urban areas these home visits can also be dangerous. In this case the police support is crucial.

In my case, in all the years that I took as a teacher, I only had one home visit. For Christmas's sake, move the home of a student from a needy family to leave some present and a message of comfort and friendship for that special night. It was well received and I feel like the visit. I feel that teacher-student relationship, teacher-parent, was more affable. I never did other visits. I fear that in other circumstances parents will regard abuse and intrusion in their private and family lives.

In Italy such visits are not common and being honest I do not think that they are a good idea. There is a private life in which we should not enter. We are at school, we have email and we are always there for a parent's meeting.

In Italy we are not used to home visits. I have more than 150 students and it's not possible to go to their houses. What we can do is to be available at school or even on the phone at different times and I sometimes give them availability even at weekends. Sometimes it happens families live near my place and we meet at church or at the park and we stop talking about school but I've never experience a home visit.

I have never conducted a home visit. It is very important that parent agree to involve themselves in a similar experience. I think that it is a very goog ideea because first of all teachers could see the environnement in which children develop their personality, could notive the conditions in which they study, and even the relation between parents and parents and childre. I did last year's home visits with the families of disabled students. In this case it is very useful because at home a parent feels more protected and he is willing to talk about his concerns about the school. My experience was positive. Antonella Italy Actually I never had experiences of home visits. I'm pretty sure that in my school some teachers did it in the past cause the student as enabled to be in scool for chemoterapy.I think that i's a very difficult thinng to do cause some parents could be hostile to this.

I have never conduct such a visit. I think a good idea to visit families is through the EU projects with exchange of students. During this projects teachers have the opportunity to visit families and see how the exchange goes on.

The only visit to a student's home was that he was able to sign important papers related to the student. In my country are not in use home visit by teachers. I never have taken this home visits. My main cconcern is that parents thinks that their son has been reported as a case of social assistance and they are hostile. It need a cultural preparation of parents.

In Portugal, it is not common to have home visits. When families have difficulties, especially economic ones, teachers try to help solve problems. In these cases, by discretion, teachers can go to the families' home.
Sometimes in pre-primary and primary education, teachers make family visits to contact some professions or activities.

As mentioned before, the Greek Ministry gives no such opprtunities to teachers. However, no one can actually forbid a teacher to pay a visit to a family, although that would probably seem strange and somewhat suspicious. Some parents invite their kids' teachers over for a 'getting-to-know-each-other' cup of coffee, but teachers hardly ever accept, trying to protect themselves and to keep a balance as well as a distance from the parents. I think there are various ways for a teacher to 'explore' a student's family environment and quite a few others to engage them in their teaching framework in a fruitful and mutually beneficial manner.

I agree that home visit system should be created at least at a city municipality level if not national one. We don‘t have such a thing in our country. Sometimes teachers do that on voluntary basis, but I believe it to be unfair because teachers are never compensated for this extra effort. However, I am 100% sure that such visits help to bridge school and home gap, which is vitally important to students success and could be made primary.

I went to the house of an apprentice to give my condolences after the death of her father. Usually we do not have the habit of going to the pupils 'home, although I knew some support teachers went because they needed something. I have never conducted any home visits.In my country, it is rare and it is not that acceptable.I believe support can be done with different ways too.Face to face meetings at school is very effective ,too.Each country has its own cultural dynamics and iin my culture it is not common.On the other hand, each teacher has many students so it is not feasible in practice.

I never had home visits home. I think this type of program have many advantages like bringing the community closer to school. However I have some doubts and especially fears, because I think the fact that there is no such program in Portugal can have a negative effect and that the parents think that we are getting too involved. Generally, in Cyprus system we do not use this practice generally. We only use it when a child is very ill and absent for a long period. From such visits you can find out a lot about the family and the student but sometimes you and the family feel uncomfortable. In addition parents might pass you wrong information.

In Romania, many years ago, home visits were regular/normal. Not so much today. It can be made, it` s up to us. No interdiction. I, for one, went only once. I think that a social assistant should go also, if the family is in difficulty. My primal concern would be to not put the family I visit in a vulnerable position, parents to feel embarased or defensive. I think I prefer school.
