Communication, or lack thereof could be to do with health care professionals viewing NIPE as a tickbox exercise. The time restraints, and lack of NIPE trained professionals could see them facing pressures of breeching the 72hour window, which may result in them rushing through examination, potentially missing early detection of an abnormality.

The health care professional carrying out the NIPE and sharing screening results with parents may provoke the HCP to feel apologetic - if they weren't screening baby, the parents would have been in ignorant bliss. Parents may feel responsible for the screening result - eg if a mother knew she'd had alcohol in her pregnancy and was hoping it hadn't affected the baby. Parents may feel disappointment or guilt that their baby isn't perfectly healthy.

knowledge of the NIPE from a parents perspective can be limited. Parents can view the NIPE as a seal of approval to simply know their child is 'perfect'. Yet parents knowledge of the process and why it is conducted is limited when the assessments are conducted. Antenatal education on all screening would ensure parents view a NIPE for exactly what it is a screening tool.

Communication is imperative when carrying out a NIPE in order to gather a full family history and in order for the family to understand what you are doing and why, however this is not always done, or done effectively therefore this can change the way a family will engage with you, and possibly lead to information being missed
