The battle took place on June 1862 and the 9 Union vessels there defeated the 8 Confederate ships as thousands of people watched from the riverbank.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Kentucky was a southern border state that played an important part in the Civil War. At the beginning of the war Kentucky took a neutral position and the Confederate General Leonidas Polk failed to take the state for the confederacy. Legislature petitioned the Union army to be sent to Kentucky for assistance and in general most of Kentucky was controlled by the Union. Also the battle of Perryville was the biggest battle fought in Kentucky, there were 72,196 combatants (55,396 Union and 16,800 Confederates) and this was a Union victory which allowed Kentucky to be kept as a Union territory. &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><br></strong>Tennessee sent over 120,000 soldiers to fight for the Confederacy and over 31,000 came to represent the Union and the state of Tennessee had more battles fought within its borders than any other state except Virginia&nbsp; during the Civil War. The main battles that took place in the state were Shiloh, Fort Donelson, Chickamauga/Chattanooga, and Stones Rivers. Some 105,000 Tennesseans voted for secession and 47,000 voted against it and in the end the state of Tennessee was the 11th state to join the Confederacy.</div>]]></description>
