Parent involvement is an important instrument in the success of our students, and as teachers, we must do everything we can to promote parent and family participation. A parent’s lack of involvement may have nothing to do with the idea that they don’t care but may have to do with the parent feeling embarrassed that they are not educated themselves. They may have not received a formal education and due to the language barrier feel as though they have nothing to contribute. This is a quick video discussing how a school can create cultural and community awareness by having a dinner night, in which families from all over bring a dish to the school and “break bread” together. Families begin to understand that they are not alone and they can rely on the school and other families for support. This is just one idea, but it can lead to so much more.
http://www.colorincolorado.org/guide/guide-engaging-ell-families-twenty-strategies-school-leaders

This is a fascinating article from The Atlantic that examines how charter schools in Texas have better served and educated ESL students than their public school counterparts (this is on a large scale investigation). The article examine what exactly is the explanation for this fact, and a big reason proffered might the freedom that charter schools are afforded which allows them more creative ways to scaffold knowledge for their students. Moreover, this article was written 3 years ago, so it would be interesting to see if this results have held consistent.

This article has great suggestions on how teachers can get parents of ELLs more involved. A suggestion I found really beneficial was hosting a Spanish language back-to-school night. The article suggests to make sure to have a good interpreter set up ahead of time. This way, ELL parents will feel involved and will be informed throughout the school year. Not only can teachers use this idea for Spanish speaking parents, they can do it for any language.
http://www.colorincolorado.org/article/how-reach-out-parents-ells

While this video is in Spanish (there are English subtitles), I think it provides a lot of great information. It talks directly to the parents of ELLs and how much they want to be involved in their child's education, but they don't feel helped always. They also talk about how Latino students are the highest dropout rates among students. Take a look if you have ELLs in your classroom. It will really make you empathize with these parents. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_-aLWOk9Og

Their suggestions of using the parent's preferred language is a must, because it will help make the meeting smooth and the parents will feel welcome and open to communicate, particularly if there is a translator that can communicate in each language. Additionally, I liked the suggestion of educating parents on how the school system works in the United States. Often times, students come from different countries where what is expected of them and their parents is different than what we have established as a cultural norm, here.

I think creating a Virtual Open House is such a neat idea, as it gives working, or timid parents the opportunity to step into their students’s classroom to see what their teachers and kids have been up to. The Virtual Open House takes minimal effort and is just another great example of how technology can bring the classroom to the parents. I will absolutely incorporate this idea into my classroom, as it will allow my families to be a part of their student’s school and education.
