The consumer decision is more than cost of the product because of the longterm economic and environmental effects every single purchase we make has. Specifically the significance of using animal products has on our ecosystem.

As Good on You explains, “We consider how well a brand traces it’s animal products and its animal welfare policies. We identify the use of fur, angora, down feather, shearling, karakul and exotic animal skin and hair. We also consider wool use including ‘mulesing’ and whether and how the brand uses leather.” Considering this company has found a way to completely avoid usage of animal products says so much about how we can do more and better when it comes to purchasing the products we want with conscious mindsets.

Nae is a Portuguese brand that supplies boots, bags, and other accessories. NAE stands for “No Animal Exploitation” a name that reflects on the mission of the brand; to propose an alternative against animal exploitation. Nae uses a high proportion of eco-friendly materials including recycled materials and manufactures locally to reduce its carbon footprint. The quote I chose is : “We will only be truly free when those in bondage are finally free”. This quote relates to the forced/unfair labor that certain people are enduring and in this case, Nae fights against this bondage. Compared to brands like UGG or Dr. Martens this brand is around the same price or even cheaper, so it seems as tho it wouldn’t even be an economical issue to switch from brands like that to Nae.

Adidas gets a 4 overall. It uses a medium proportion of recycled materials, has an absolute target on greenhouse gas emissions from its own company (though not its supply chain), and conducts research about the impact of microplastics. Although it is mostly transparent about where its products are produced, Adidas does not ensure that a living wage is met for the workers of its suppliers. Adidas uses leather and exotic animal hair but has a formal animal welfare policy.

A similar product from Nike costs around $55: ten dollars more, likely because Nike is a name brand. However, Nike only has a 3 rating overall because it does not meet standards for planet, person, or animal, so the extra $10 is definitely not worth it.

A quote from Mahatma Gandhi about slavery is, "No one chains a slave without chaining himself." I thought this connected well because consumers in wealthy country are sometimes unintentionally supporting slavery by buying from companies that facilitate the practice. Even if the consumer does not know about it, this is perpetuating slavery in our modern society.

Although culthread is way more expensive it is worth it because we know that what we are buying from is a ethical business and is not adding to fast fashion. The quote I choose was “Every great dream begins with a dreamer” I think this proves that you need to look beyond the price and inspire other brands to also be sustainable.

STORY mfg is an environmentally conscious clothing brand with a great rating of 5. It uses sustainable and eco-friendly materials like organic cotton and non-toxic dyes for their clothing. They also reuse materials to minimize textile waste. The company ensures all of the laborers are being paid a living wage, and it is animal-friendly as it is entirely vegan.

Quote:

“Brute force can never subdue the basic human desire for freedom.” The Dalai Lama

Though STORY mfg is on the pricier side, it’s materials and labor practices are ethical and protect the environment and workers. Doing what you can as a consumer will help those forced into labor in the fashion industry. It is more important than the actual cost because it has a direct impact of the lives of those who make, manufacture, or ship the clothing, as well as the everyone on the planet because of the impact fast fashion has on the physical ecosystem.

From Kings of Indigo, these are the MARIE blue black worn jeans. Since 2012, Kings of Indigo has curated sustainable denim collections, making itself known as a leader in sustainable fashion. Planet is 5/5, people is 4/5, and animal is 4/5. King of Indigo uses a high proportion of eco-friendly materials cotton and recycled packaging. It encourages consumers to reduce their climate impact when using its products. Its use of eco-friendly materials limits the amount of chemicals, water and wastewater used in production. I chose the quote “We will only be truly free when those in bondage are finally free” by Desmond Tutu. The quote explains that when the people who are struggling are set free, everyone will be set free. Connecting to clothing and products, once everyone realizes that some brands are unhealthy and bad for the environment, everyone will live in a healthier and better world.

As included on the homepage of their website, Boyish has avoided 61,146 miles of emissions, saved 6,614,358 days of drinking water, farmed 394,312 sq. feet of land without pesticides, and diverted 1,060 pounds of waste from landfills. These positive impacts benefit the planet along with their practices of using recycled cotton and compostable packaging. I chose the quote, “Every dream begins with a dreamer”, said by Harriet Tubman. This quote, while more general than specific, represents how we can make the world a better, cleaner place as long as we have the imagination and effort to do so.

Sealand is a bag company based in South Africa. They are committed to using cotton grown in Africa. This in turn allows them to guarantee that their workers are paid a living wage. When they are not using locally grown products they upcycle already used plastic goods, even then only doing so for accents.

Quote: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do this.”— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Connecting this to the price of these goods, by the choices that consumers make they are able to enact a larger sea change. Much like the 2019-2020 Mitty Liturgical Theme, by one’s good actions (ethical purchases) their light shines and influences others, driving out the darkness, in this case unethical practices.

Fair Indigo - Daniel

I chose this little frog from Fair Indigo because it is absolutely something I would buy. Fair Indigo is rated as great with a 5/5 for planet, 4/5 for people, and 5/5 for animals. Compared to a frog plush that I bought at target a while back for roughly $15 that later fell apart after a few washes, resulting in me having to sew it back up, for the price that this product is at is a very good deal. Fair Indigo is striving to make the world more sustainable by working with two Peruvian Pima Cotten family farms while all of their products are handmade. They also believe in human rights and that workers shouldn’t just barely live, but they should be thriving while doing what they love, thus they their “artisans and operators in Peru are paid a fair and living wage and treated like family, giving them the means to a healthy, happy life.” The quote that I chose was from Pope Francis and it is “I have stated several times that these new forms of slavery – human trafficking, forced labour, prostitution, organ trade – are very serious crimes, a wound on the body of contemporary humanity. The whole of society is called to grow in this awareness, especially with regard to national and international legislation, in order to prosecute the traffickers and redirect their unjust gains to the rehabilitation of victims.” I believe that Fair Indigo follows this and makes sure that they make the world a better place through their company and how they make their products.

Organic Basics has a great environment rating. It primarily uses eco-friendly materials like organic cotton in its clothing. Even within its production of clothing, Organic Basics uses renewable energy all throughout its supply chain. Further along thensupppy chain, Organic Basics has a formal statement covering workers rights and provides living wage.
Fanletics would be a counterpart to Organic Basics. Fabletics scraped by with a 2/5 on both ratings. Fabletics leggings range from $20 to $70. While most Organic Basics leggings range from $45-$65 dollars. The added cost is worth it.
