Name THREE things that can best represent the heritage site you pinned down – the character-defining elements (CDEs) and what values these CDEs show? (e.g. architectural / aesthetic value, historical value, social value, symbolic value, etc.)
Assess the condition of these CDEs
(red – action is needed; yellow – attention is needed; Green – stay calm and carry on)

Spiritual Value

The plaque of the main entrance of Sam Tung Uk Museum is named “Chen's Ancestral Hall”(陳氏家祠). The ancestral hall represents the traditional culture of ancestors' worship and the unity of Chen’s Clan. Also, the direction of the ancestral hall, which is “located northwards and face south” (坐北向南), illustrates the “fengshui” (風水) belief of the Chinese. The Sam Tung Uk Museum exemplifies the traditions and customs of Chinese.

Annie Chan

Cultural value:

Many Hong Kong people go to Che Kung Temple to pray for a blessing, especially on Lunar New Year or on the day of Che Kung's birthday. Most people prepare incense and leave three sticks of incense on the main hall. They also spin the golden pinwheel clockwise with their left hand to carry on last year's good luck into the next year. In addition, people buy their own pinwheel and place it in positions according to the principles of Feng Shui. Divination (求籤) is also practised in Che Kung Temple as a way of fortune-telling. Che Kung Temple embodies the role of worship culture in Hong Kong. (Fion)

The building served as an inn accommodating long distant traders, supporting the economic activities in the Yuen Long Kau Hui business centre. Since Yuen Long Kau Hui is close to Yuen Long Chung (元朗涌), ships can unloaded their goods easily.

Historical value
Ho Ka Yuen was a two-storey semi-continental mansion with orchards and gardens built in the 1880s-90s. The Stone House that we can see nowadays was built in the early 1940s during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. At that time, the Japanese army demolished many villages in Kowloon City to expand the Kai Tak Airport, so they built bungalows to resettle the homeless villagers. The bungalow area, later on, was reduced to a squatter area and was demolished in 2001. The Ho Ka Yuen Stone House became the only remaining building.

Reecca

by Tracy

Historical Value
The Highest value of this site is the historical value, which has its speciality of witnessing the development of medical services and especially psychiatric medical services in Hong Kong with a 120 years’ history. Its history can be defined with three main periods, counting hostel of medical staffs of National Hospital in 1892-1939, temporary shelter for the Chinese psychiatric patients in 1937-1961, and a day-time psychiatric outpatient department in 1961-1971, as well as recent function of a community complex in Sai Ying Pun.

Architectural Value
The architectural value is the second highest value of the building. The speciality of the façade of Old Mental Hospital is that the architectural features and craftsmanship of monumental Early-Baroque architecture with the use of local materials are very rare for a newly-built hospital and in Hong Kong. According to Faculty of Architecture of HKU Dr Lee Ho Yin, Façade of the Old Mental Hospital has reflected the architecture style of colonial era, which is less remained in Hong Kong. This can reflect the colonial history of Hong Kong. Moverover, Declaring as monument keep the façade away from the risk of destruction with legal protection. The façade is remained of granite, which is its original appearance and keep its authenticity. To match the new structure of the Sai Ying Pun Community Complex, the back of the facade has been rebuilt accordingly.

Social Value
With its background of psychiatric hospital, it was called “Old Mental Hospital" or "High Street Haunted House" by the residents. It becomes a landmark and popular historical attraction of Western District and well-known by Hong Kong people. The name "High Street Haunted House" comes from the rumors of its haunting. When Hong Kong fell in World War II, the Japanese army used this building as an execution ground, and screams were heard from time to time. Therefore, there are ghost stories in this building and become a district Charteris tics and collective memory of Old Mental Hospital and Sai Ying Pun.

Group value
According to the point-line-plane theory, the High Street Old Mental Hospital is the point and with nearby cultural sites as its line and plane. For the overall cultural landscape of the High Street Old Mental Hospital, it is harmonious with surrounding short buildings and historic sites in High Street. Next to the Façade of High Street Old Mental Hospital, there is the old Chinese Mental Hospital on Eastern Street on Eastern Street, which is a second-level historical building. Two buildings are both with history of medical services and similar architectural style, which thus form a line.

曾大屋 Tsang Tai Uk

Historic Value
It was built in the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, by the ancestors of the Tsang family. It housed refugees during World War II, and was called Tsang Tai Uk after that.

Architectural Value
The walls are made of granite, blue brick and selected wood, while the four corners are lined with a three-storey bunker with gun holes and watchtowers to protect against burglars. What is special is that the architecture of Tsang Tai Uk is official style, integrating the elements of defense and resistance —> Allowing it to serve as a haven for refugees during World War II.

Spiritual Value
This Hakka village records the history of the Southern struggle of the Hakka people in Guangdong. In the 1840s, Hong Kong had just opened its commercial port. Tsang’s ancestors, two brothers, worked as stonemasons to run a stone factory and undertook many government projects. Their stone was used in many famous buildings in Hong Kong. When they got rich, they built the village. Therefore, the village still reminds people of the spirit of striving and giving back to the community.
