Materials
  • Diagram of the process of binary fission
  • Different colors of clay
  • Posterboard
  • Glue
  • Markers
Directions
  1. Your teacher will show you a ball of clay. Divide the ball of clay into two identical balls. Then, divide each of those balls into two identical balls. Your teacher demonstrated the process of binary fission.
  2. Your teacher will show the class a diagram of binary fission, and discuss the steps of this type of asexual reproduction.
  3. You will be divided into pairs, and each pair will be provided different colors of clay, poster board, glue, and markers.
  4. You have to create clay models of the steps of binary fission. Each pair will use different colors of clay to show how the organism changes through the steps of binary fission, including what is happening to the DNA in each step. You will glue the clay models onto the poster board and use markers to label each step, important parts of the model, and provide a brief description of what's happening in each step.
  5. When you are finished, share your models with the class.
