         <description><![CDATA[<div>   This experiment on CO2 rockets addresses the relationship between the distance the lid travels and the amount of CO2 gas produced by the chemical reaction. Important terms to know are citric acid, chemical reaction, effervescent, solubility, reactants, and products. I also know that alka-seltzer ingredients are citric acid and sodium bicarbonate and also that when a chemical reaction occurs when bubbles indicate gas. The information will confirm the link between gas production and the distance the rocket lid travels.<br>     A chemical reaction is when two or more substances combine to make a new product or products. The atoms rearrange to make new molecules. The reactants produce products. Signs of a chemical reaction are production of gas, light, change in temperature, formation of precipitate, and change in color. The parts of a chemical reactions are the reactants and products. Some examples of a chemical reaction are Alka-Seltzer in water. This is a chemical reaction because of the effervescent (fizzing/bubbling.) Another chemical reaction is baking a cake. Baking a cake is a chemical reaction because you can't separate the eggs, water, etc.<br> Alka-Seltzer is made of sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. The chemical reaction that occurs is carbonation. The temperature affects the production of CO2 because the hotter the temperature the faster the molecules move. <br> A personal experience I have had is with baking soda and vinegar. My experience was in 6th grade and we exploded volcanoes. The baking soda and vinegar reacted and created bubbles and made the volcano explode.  <br>   <br><br> </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The purpose of this experiment is to see the chemical reaction between two products. We had 2 variables and a control. Our control is half canister of room temperature water and 1/2 tablet of&nbsp;<br>Alka-Seltzer. My variable is 1/2 canister of hot water. My partners variable is 1/2 canister of hot water. In this experiment we had hot, cold and room temperature water. We got 1/2 tablet of Alka-Seltzer and we put the tablets into room temperature, cold and hot water and we timed hoe long they took to launch the lids. Finally, we measured how far the lid landed. In our experiment the cold water (variable 2) launched farther.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; If I add 1/2 tablet of Alka-Seltzer(effervescent) tablets to 1/2 cup of cold or hot water then I think hot water will cause the rocket to travel farther because the hot water will melt the Alka-Seltzer tablets faster and the cold water will "freeze" the tablet. My hypothesis was correct because the hot water lid traveled farther then the cold water lid because the cold water took longer so the tablet dissolved by the time the carbonation built up. The data for the cold water for the first trial was 3.9 meters and the time was 1:33. For the second trial was 4 meters and time was 1:42. Data for the third trial was 4.2 meters and the time was 1:28. The data for hot water was trial 1 0.4 meters and 17 sec. The second trial was 4.9 meters and 6 sec. The last trial was 3.7 meters and 6.7 sec. Observations from cold water were the cold water trial 1 we had 3 or 4 duds and we figured out that the cold water took a lot longer to release the lid because the cold water made the molecules move slower so it took a lot longer to launch. Hot water observations were that the hot water melted the Alka-Seltzer faster because the molecules move faster which melted the tablets fast. Trends that occured with cold water wwre that all the lid landed near 4 meters or a little above 4 meters. We also found that cold water always took longer then a minuter. A trend that occured with hot water was that hot water always took a few seconds to launch.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;Possible sources of errors in the design were that the canisters that had the lip on the cap did not work because the air was escaping from the canister. Another problem that we had was that we were gonna build paper rockets around the canister but the paper was too heavy. One error we had during testing was that the cold water melted the tablets kept melting so we had to try 3 or 4 times before the experiment worked. Some improvements we could have made were to put the lid on quicker so the carbonation would build up before the tablet melted.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;The big science idea is how two products react (Alka-Seltzer and water) to create a chemical reaction to make the lid launch off. The results of our experiment we saw that hot water was one who went the farthest overall. During our hot water experiment we saw that hot water went the fastest to launch the lid off because the molecules were moving faster which the Alka-Seltzer melt faster. What made the lid launch off was the build up of CO2. During the cold water we had trouble because the tablet kept melting to fast which made the carnation not build up enough to launch the lid.</div>]]></description>
