The juxtaposition shows that at first, the soup was better than ever, but the second time, it tasted like death and bodies. "I remember that on that evening, the soup tasted better than ever... That night, the soup tasted like corpses." (Weisel, 63 and 65) Also, the executioner didn't hesitate to kill the first victim, but on the second one, who was a child, the executioner was replaced by SS soldiers, and the Lageralteste spoke with a shaking voice. "The executioner had completed his work. ....This time, the Lagerkapo refused to act as executioner. 3 SS took his place... 'Caps off!' screamed the Lageralteste. His voice quivered." (Weisel, 63 and 64) And finally, during the first execution, everybody was silent, yet after the second one, a man was asking where God was in all this. "Behind me, I heard the same man asking: 'For God's sake, where is God?'" (Weisel, 65)

This juxtaposition shows that humanity was cruel due to the fact that the executioners hung a young, innocent boy because deep down the SS officers didn't want to execute him but their cruel, twisted minds still did it anyways. For instance, "To hang a child in front of thousands of onlookers was not a small deal," (Wiesel page 64) shows there concern but humanity overtakes them and they do it anyways. Another example on how the juxtapoison shows about the lost of faith is most of the Jews where effected so badly by the hanging of the little boy that they kept questioning where God was. As quoted, "Where He is? This is where--hanging here from this gallows," (Wiesel page 65) shows the lost of faith that God was no longer with them. One last example on how he uses juxtaposition about the evil in the humanity he was faces was, with each the hangings or anyone who was hung, they had to watch it and look at them in lose range. The humanity of the SS officers were cruel and pure evil to force them to watch others be hung and have to come face to face to see it. As you can see, "We were forced to look at him at close range," (Wiesel page 65) shows how they were forced to look at the hung people which sets off a message of humanity being evil.
