Desire Path

As recorded by GARMIN Etrex 20x

Map created through Garmin Basecamp and Caltop

This route follows a partial Segment of a Run though Knox Farm State Park

on 5/30/22

The Weather was around 83’F with light wind and no clouds

Running in these parklands is a (moslty) daily practice of both physical exercise and mental rejuvenation from screened connections when in my childhood Hometown.

These conditions provided a challenge within my body though dynamic environmental factors; sun, wind, terrain, and perceived body temperature mixed to create a unique experience. Shade dominated my desire path. Sight lining for contrasting shaded areas under trees and into woodland factored into my desire. Along with this a familiarity with place; having run here uncountable times, That for me inspires a comfortability with tuning into the body off the navigational mindset. This familiarity with the grounds enabled my directions to happen with flow and curiosity. Pausing at junctures of Shade and wind within forest openings punctuated more intentional moments through sunny open areas. This transition can be seen within this map as shaded areas in darker green and more open areas seen in background Topographic map.

Water as a key part of body temperature regulation during exercise in hot weather was also a key desire within this route. My direction to a public water spicket can be seen as an out and back line directly south into unshaded area.

Embodied Cartography Task

Smells Description

Isaac Dana

On my given path’s smells waft into my senses both with the pace of my movement and remain constant. As I am running, I find some smells approach quicky.; I run up on them. While others come with me and become infused into background mix of experiences. The two predominate and pervasive smells within the scene are emanating from my own body. Body Oder; mostly comprised of salty sweat collecting on my shirt not yet evaporated off on this blazing day come with me. The pheromones my body produces along with the process of sweat smell unique. A concoction of unique chemicals not only to my own body but also to the given day, diet, and other factors. Along with the rhythms of my feet, breath coregulates my flow through the Run. An Acidic sugary infusion takes the short journey from mouth to nostrils. A result of poor preperformance hydration and compensation with electrolyte drink I consumed along the way.

The incidental smells I experience come and go along the way. Some return when I loop back thought a section of Medow trail while others are just glimpses. Others personal smells compared to my own provided me with the most vivid contrast on both pervasiveness and texture along my way. Artificial detergents, scented laundry and perfumes emanate from people thought the landscape. These smells have direction, taking on a trailing effect of the individual's motion. If I approach them counter directionally or pass an individual dictates when I start to smell, their sometimes-potent aroma. A second distinct Smell comes as I pass the dog waste collection stations. Canine excrement along with plastic bags off-gassing in the sun provide a composition which lingers in my subconscious.

Along with these a subcategory of non-pervasive smells includes a mucky stagnation pond, Once the estates inground pool. Opposing this is sweet but heavy smell of pollen around the reclaimed fields my path winds through when not hiding in shade.

This is a really dramatic representation of all the birds I hear at once. Usually it isn't this dramatic but at night at the wet ponds, you'll hear them all. Some of the birds you might hear are grackles (very common in Austin), pigeons, mocking birds, robins, and blue jays. You'll probably hear some frogs and crickets as well.

You'll find a lot of houses with vegetable or community gardens as their front lawns, and even some people with chickens and goats roaming around. It's an interesting juxtaposition from the urban landscape of downtown Austin (even though we are downtown!).

Location: ///tidy.sweeter.grazed

At any given time, there's a least one person tending their yard and they bring up a lot of the smells buried underground or in their plants when they do that. Mulch isn't very common, but where there is mulch, especially after a rain, the smells of hickory or other fragrant woods can be quite intense.

The two very distinct calls that can be heard here are the Yellow Bellied Flycatchers and Common Grackles. I start out in the shared community space out here drinking coffee, drawing and listening to the sounds of the jungle waking up most mornings. The neighborhood is named Opera Salvage, which translates as Wild Song. In the morning the smell of the jungle changes. As the sun comes up the damp coolness of night is dispersed into daytime humidity. These pre dawn hours are precious for being outside without having to deal with direct sunlight. Many of the trees have flowers that open during the dawn hours and heady perfumes float through the yard, attracting a variety of hummingbirds and butterflies.

Folks start filtering in around 30 mins before it starts, meeting up with family and friends. Surfers try for one last paddle out, kids play in the sand. Palm fires are lit to keep the bugs away bringing the scent of fire with the breezes that intermingles sweetly with the fresh saltiness of the ocean air. This is a more moody rainy season sunset versus the clear sky idyllic of dry season.

The sound of the electric transformer for the neighborhood popping is never a good thing! Rain in the jungle is different - louder, more forceful, the droplets are bigger and so are the leaves that they are hitting. Heavy rain smells like I imagine being underwater would smell if we humans had the ability to inhale in that state. Sometimes I swim in the pool while it's raining, water and wet dirt and leaves smells permeate everything.

There have been holiday and birthday celebrations, visits with old and new friends, thousands of walks with my husband up and down the shoreline. Here I have given my words and tears to the ocean, prayed for guidance and floated untethered on her more gentle days. I will be visiting here again in September after being away for a year, I am eager to see my old friend again.

- What are the earliest historic trade routes that have crossed this body of water?

There is evidence of human settlement in Hong Kong from Neolithic times. Several thousand years ago, people here were hunting, fishing and making exquisite rock carvings. The harbour had been marked prominently on Chinese charts for centuries past, and fishing communities thrived on the south side of the island. In the 19th century, after being ceded by China to the British under the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, the colony of Hong Kong quickly became a regional center for financial and commercial services. The subject of pollution came to the fore in the 1970s with the rapid growth of the manufacturing sector.

- Can you name one myth that comes from this body of water?

Not exactly a myth, but the emperor of Manchukuo from Manchuria was exiled in Hong Kong and was told that he killed himself by jumping into the harbour from the Kowloon peninsula.

- Do you have a personal memory of connected to this body of water?

My mother has a fear of ocean waters so as a kid even if we went to beach outings, she would not let us get close to the water. This instilled a natural aversion to ocean and water. Throughout my adolescence, I had memories of having long chats with friends looking out into the harbour as well as enjoying boat trips with my friend's father. As my connection to water rekindled, I now frequent this body of water through freediving, wild swimming, and exploring its winding shorelines comprised of different islands. Traveling by ferry still remains to be my favorite way of transportation.

A River I will Never Swim In

The Cooper River, a tributary of the larger Delaware River, which was once the industrial heart of Philadelphia. This is the closest body of water in terms of proximity to my parents home where I am staying and the place where I grew up in Southern NJ.

This river has been polluted for the entirety of my life. At one point in the 1970's it tested as being a 40% sewage to water ratio. In the the 1980's it was considered to be the 3rd most polluted river in the United States.

In returning home this week, I started wondering about the health of the river, thinking about how the current reality might challenge these old stories about the toxic nature of the this particular body of water. There are some metaphors about my relationship to this place in the works as it relates to the river and our work together has taught me to better challenge my narrative assumptions.

It turns out there is a new story emerging. The Clean Water Act and the city of Philadelphia addressing a storm water drainage problem has been effective, and certain parts of the river are able to sustain wildlife again. People are being encourage through a river activist organization called Upstream Alliance (https://upstreamalliance.org/) and other local grassroots organizations on to how to engage with the river and educate others what protection for the river might look like through those interactions. It is possible that within the next year, the tidal portion of the river might get a designation of the highest level of environmental protection from Department of Environmental Protection, which would only increase and build on the current positive efforts.

“The Cooper River is a poster child for why we passed the Clean Water Act and how the Act has succeeded. In a generation, we have gone from the river serving as a dead zone to being a living part of Camden County communities.’’ - Doug O’Malley, director of Environment New Jersey.

"The Delaware River’s recent gains were recognized in April when American Rivers, a national advocacy group, named the Delaware its River of the Year because of improvements in water quality, increasing populations of fish and wildlife, and its status as the longest un-dammed river in the eastern United States." (1)

I don't think that I will ever swim in this section of the river, but it's encouraging to think that change is possible when ecological awareness is married with action and education. If I can go upstream to the healthier sections that are closer to the Delaware River while I am here, I will see what possibilities emerge there.

(1) The article I pulled this quote from does a nice job of explaining some of the more nuanced aspects of the return of the health to the Delaware River and it's connection to Cooper River.

https://e360.yale.edu/features/on-the-delaware-a-promising-new-era-in-cleanup-of-an-urban-river
