You start to understand that the people are offended because they thinks its disrespectful to talk like that to elders. It is important because it reveals that the town is very proper or believes that lots of questions and talking is disrespectful. We can infer this is how the people in the town were raised to think like.

I can tell the author is using personification, I know this because it the author gives human traits to a nonliving thing, the vents and duct work. It is effective because it helps the reader visualize the building as living or human like, and how it could be unnerving, or comforting for the character. It helps us learn that the building is very large and that it's possibly very old because creaky vents and supports in a building usually mean that it's very old. This later contributes to the plot when someone burns it down, contributing that it could have been very flammable because of dust or old inner workings.

The author is using a Hyperbole because they are exaggerating how long they would wanted to have had her as their teacher. It's effective because it shows how much they loved her and how she treated them like adults and was never mad. The author included this because they wanted the reader to know how much the kids respected and liked the teacher, and how when she died, we would know how sad the kids would be, and how it affected them and their lives. We see this at the end when one of the kids goes with his parents to the cemetery to put flowers on her grave. When the kids say the beginning quote, this contributes to the plot when later on they don't do anything bad when there is a substitute teacher, even though their teacher isn't there. They do this because they don't want the substitute to give them a bad report and make their teacher mad.

In this scene, the main character realizes that even though her brother ruin some of her things, he is still learning about his new life and wasn't trying to make her mad. We learn that she no longer is mad at her brother and that she still loves him. It's important because it shows she's moved on and forgives her brother. This reveal that Lena is a kind and caring person, she just needed to realize Hakeem wasn't trying to hurt her.

We learn that Lena was very excited to see Hakeem, but is let down when he doesn't come over to see her. This is important to the plot because it reveals that Lena is impatient, an wants him to to come over to her right away. We can infer though that over time Hakeem warms up to her and they become good friends.
