This chapter discusses several methods of teaching science within the traditional formats: lectures, discussion sessions, and laboratories. How can you help your students learn science better and more efficiently in each format? Although there is no universal best way to teach, experience shows that some general principles apply (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1990a; McDermott et al., 1994; Mazur, 1996):

The narrative is a fundamental, ubiquitous mode of human communication. A story – an account of events with emphasis on personal perspective or connection, employing dramatic tension – is among the most widespread and common methods of communicating information. Stories strengthen the social bonds of human society and facilitate the transmission of culture. We learn about our world by hearing and seeing stories, and in turn we share our understanding of the world by telling stories. Neuroscience research supports the importance of narratives to human culture. Stories activate neurochemical pathways related to trust and social bonding, and the emotional resonance evoked by a narrative stimulates neural systems related to empathy.

Teaching is the art and science of helping others to grow in their knowledge and understanding. But more than that:

Teaching is holding the hand of a young one and saying it's going to be OK.

Teaching is being careful that you acknowledge every student every day.

Teaching is never forgetting that for a moment each day you might be the only person who touches someone's life.

Teaching is constantly being aware of what you are doing wrong in the classroom and trying to find ways to fix them.

Teaching is keeping up with both the latest research and honoring the enduring traditions.

Teaching is worrying that you don't know about about the subject deeply to make it easily accessible to everyone.

Teaching is correcting papers when you family is relaxing watching TV or out in the yard.

Teaching is pushing both yourself and the students those last few weeks of school.

Teaching involves the giving of oneself to others so that possibly, just possibly, the piece that one gives will blossom in the heart of another and, even more importantly, might cause others unknown to you to blossom.

Whether you’re a first-year teacher eager to put into practice all of the pedagogical techniques you learned in college, or a classroom veteran examining differentiated instruction and new learning methodologies, consider that not all students respond well to one particular style. Although teaching styles have been categorized into five groups, today’s ideal teaching style is not an either/or proposition but more of a hybrid approach that blends the best of everything a teacher has to offer.

The traditional advice that teachers not overreach with a cluster of all-encompassing teaching styles might seem to conflict with today’s emphasis on student-centered classrooms. Theoretically, the more teachers emphasize student-centric learning the harder it is to develop a well-focused style based on their personal attributes, strengths and goals.

In short, modern methods of teaching require different types of teachers—from the analyst/organizer to the negotiator/consultant. Here are some other factors to consider as teachers determine the best teaching method for their students.
