Women's clothing had a huge impact on sneaking hidden documents, letters, or anything that you needed to sneak back to the government. Petticoats and hoop skirts were the fashion in the mid 1800's. There were secret pockets inside the skirts to hide important papers or objects and take them back to their leader.

Kathryn would wake up at 4:00 in the morning each day. The girls in her group would meet up and talk. Most days they would have tasks. From going to get information from the president, to as small as buying food for dinner. All of their missions were very dangerous. Knowing that at any second if they get caught they are at risk of going to prison. Yet they still took the chance to help out. Thats why they became spies. Usually women spies were not married, just to make it easier for them to not have to support a family.

"When I was younger I had a normal life. I lived with my mom, my dad, my two brothers and my grandma. We had no idea this war was coming. My grandma worked with the union so she knew everything. I always wanted to work with the union and so did my friend Elizabeth. Elizabeth Van Lew has been my friend for as long as I could remember. She wanted to work for the union also. I will always remember the main reason why I wanted to become a spy, because men didnt think women would get involved with such a dangerous job. Women were easily trusted and were not threats to the soldiers, this made would make my job easier because there was a small chance of getting caught."
