Cocaine followed in 1880 and was used for health drinks and remedies. During the turn of the century, there was increased awareness that these drugs could easily cause addiction. Local governments started to shut down opium dens and make these drugs illegal because drugs were no longer looked at for having great medical benefits and useful remedies. In 1906, the Pure Food and Drug Act required all physicians to label their food and medicine accurately. The Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914, made all manufacture and sale of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and morphine illegal and this act was very aggressively enforced. The United States spent hundreds millions of dollars closing up boarders from Mexico to the United States. Trade between the United States and Mexico virtually completely stopped and came to a stand still.
