Drugs first dramatically surfaced in the 1800's when opium first became popular in the American Civil War. Cocaine followed in 1880 and was used for health drinks and remedies. During the turn of the century, there was increased awareness that these drugs could easily cause addiction. Local governments started to shut down opium dens and make these drugs illegal because drugs were no longer looked at for having great medical benefits and useful remedies. In 1906, the Pure Food and Drug Act required all physicians to label their food and medicine accurately. The Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914, made all manufacture and sale of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and morphine illegal and this act was very aggressively enforced. This lead to thousands of physicians getting imprisioned and people would start to manufacture and sell drugs for recreational use illegally and secretively

In 1971, President Nixon stated that the United States number one public enemy is drug abuse. As long as there is demand for drugs, there will be people willing to meet that demand at all costs. Nixon later later tried to make all drugs and drug production illegal in Mexico. The United States spent hundreds millions of dollars closing up boarders from Mexico to the United States. Trade between the United States and Mexico virtually completely stopped and came to a stand still. Nixon succeeded in preventing Mexico's marijuana exportation into the United States but Colombia was quick to replace Mexico in drug exportation and is now the number one illegal drug trade country.

To help fight the war on drugs, we can stop doctors from prescribing people to drugs with little information about the person. Many websites and authors have stated that we should decriminalize recreational drug use and stop wasting government money and time by putting many people in jail for use of drugs such as marijuana. Instead, we should put our money and time into helping people get over their drug abuse problems. Having expensive rehabilitation centers to help people get over drug use such as marijuana, we should give them community support and spend our money on helping people that have serious drug problems such as the use of heroin or unsafe injecting

A big argument going on right now is whether or not the United States should make marijuana illegal. With growing support of legalizing marijuana, the majority of Americans believe that marijuana should be legalized nation-wide. The support for the legalization is at an all time high and is predicted to keep growing.
