Hora, Matthew Wolfgram, and Zi Chen, Zi Chen explains how financial barriers negatively affect low-income students, and first-generation students everywhere. Specially, educational, financial, and social barriers contribute to low participation in internships from low-income, and first-gen students. Matthew T. Hora, Matthew Wolfgram, and Zi Chen’s article explain that universities, businesses, and the state act like “gate-keepers” resulting in educational, cultural, and social barriers. Low-income, and first-generation students are negatively affected by being denied access to internships because of their lack of financial, social, and cultural capital.

Our society heavily uses internships as a way to get a job, and to also prove that someone is qualified for a job. Internships can be seen as a stepping stone to get into a career or business. Yet, internships are only something widely available for some. “First-generation college students reported that they felt that a lack of experience with higher education in their families was an obstacle to their participation in internships” (Hora, Wolfgram, Chen, pg 21). As more students come from low-income and first-generation student, backgrounds have felt that their backgrounds impose problems in their internships, creating a lack of support from their families.

This lack of support from family members and a lack of support from their colleges causes students to doubt the need to do an internship. “In some cases, families were not be supportive of the idea of pursuing an internship, especially those that were unpaid and required travel and relocation expenses.” (Hora, Wolfgram, Chen, pg 22). This information is a great example of how families can interfere with the chances of internships if parents don't go to higher education. They won't advocate for their children to go to higher education either; they'd just want them to stay and work.

The financial struggles affect people's chances of getting internships if they have to move or change jobs because of money issues. The article states “This support ranged from paying room, board, and travel expenses to substantial in-kind support, and even with considerable financial support, most interns worked other jobs in addition to their unpaid internships to cover expenses.” (Hora, Wolfgram, Chen, pg 5). This information explains how most interns during their time with the internship will also work at another job to cover expenses for the internship if not fully paid for. Also, there are chances that you have to travel so you have to pay for housing too, making it more expensive.

Mental health is an umbrella term used to explain many conditions, each one being something valid. Living in today's society, mental health must be taken into consideration with everything and it should be expected that students with mental health issues will miss school. Being in school should be a haven for all students who attend any type of school. So when adding school shootings into what students have to think about every day, the fear in school and out can be tied to their mental health which then can decrease the overall health of the student. “…fear of being shot by age 25 increased gun carrying for suburban female high school students but not male students. The reverse relationship, whether or not carrying a weapon or gun impacts level of fear, is less well examined” (Hughes, 10).

This in many different ways can affect people's drive to attend school or even do their school work because it's associated with that thinking and might remind them of that fear. “While weapon carrying provides a means of self-defense, evidence suggests it may actually increase rather than decrease student fear. This further reinforces his take on how carrying a gun to school can or could increase student fear, and it could also put others in a state of fear if others saw it. Students only carry a gun to school if they are afraid in turn it makes them more afraid. “Theoretically, the personal ability to defend oneself from crime, particularly violence, should lower fear. Physical size is a potential indicator of personal defensibility among youth” May (2001, p. 167). theorizes there may be a “shadow of powerlessness” operating among younger males, who may not be as large or as strong as older teenage males, thus increasing fear at school” (Hughes, 11). Students at a younger age feel more fear because they aren't as big or as strong as the older males. Both authors in the texts explain how “physical size” and “large" directly correlate to fear and how it makes them fearless because of the overall difference in size. Hughes takes information from another writer to back up his information to give more credibility and more evidence as to why younger male students feel fear around older students.

The world is seeing a lot more news articles about parents letting their children have “mental health days” off of school. Having these become more of a thing in day-to-day parenting and schooling, there does become a question of whether these should become allowed as an excuse to miss school. The answer to this should be yes, 100%. Shannon Doyne writes, “Faced with high stress levels among adolescents and a mental health crisis that includes worsening suicide rates, some states are now allowing students to declare a mental health day” (Doyne, 10). Of course, some students and parents do mental health days in states where schools haven’t officially allowed them, but there are of course ways around this. Yet, with some states making it an official thing to allow students to have a mental health day we do see a decrease in attendance, but morale is higher with the students. “Schools are also experimenting with other methods beyond mental health days to help students cope with their daily stressors.

Living in a city or even country, where accessible transportation isn’t as common or as easy to find as one would assume it can be hard, especially for college students who may not have cars to take themselves to college. “It is also unfair to expect students who do not own a car to find their own transportation when going to an off-campus, school-sponsored event or club meeting. Furman must improve transportation off campus if they want their student organizations to maintain their membership, remain diverse, and allow all students an equal opportunity to participate” (Schweiner, 10). Having an actual college student perspective on how schools and local areas don't have super convent transport helps put things into perspective as to why so many students miss school.

Of course, this isn’t something schools (especially colleges) make light of. It's something colleges brush off or falsify certain information when trying to get new students to attend their school. “Also during the campus tour, students were misguided when tour guides spoke on the accessibility of public transit through the Greenlink bus system. Currently, there is a bus stop located at Furman’s main entrance. While the bus does stop at Furman once per hour, students may not feel safe riding the bus alone and having to potentially walk a lengthy distance from the bus stop to get to their destination, especially when they want to attend Furman events or club meetings that occur at specific locations around the city” (Schweiner, 6). When thinking of attending school, students have to think about how they will be able to get to school, and how to get back to school. This is a problem that isn’t the student's fault. Once again, not having these resources widely available limits how much school students can go to, which then leads to students who miss a lot of school and classes.

This video correlates to my topics because it explains how diseases or illnesses can inhibit children's attendance which makes it harder to keep up. And in the narrator states that “if i miss too many days of school I probably won't be able to read, write or do math like my friends” this statement shows how it is hard to learn from a home environment and not in a school setting. And it's difficult to catch up with their peers. “If i'm not absent now the better i'll do later” I believe they were trying to show how it would be easier for children to do better in later grades if they missed less school early on they state this alot in the video another useful piece of info i saw was “Mommy has big dreams for me and so do i” this shows how her mother also believe in her, a lot of students give up in school because their parents didn't have the drive to do well in school either so they let them stay home and skip out on school overall depreciating their drive to learn and or succeed in school “When I miss school for any reason even if its excused it can be hard for me to catch up to my friends and when I try to make up work at home it's not the same as learning from my teachers and friends” this is by far my favorite piece i pulled from the video i believe it relates to my topic the most out of all of everything in the video, it correlates because it explains how learning from home or maybe online could be not as beneficial as a teacher could teach the student more and valuable information

The topic I have been working with all this time, has been lack of school attendance. I like this topic because I believe that it has been a real hindrance in students of the younger generation with full online classes or hybrid or even covid. All of these have led to a decline in, in person attendance which has shown that students don't learn as much and absorb as much information. I believe that a lot of the students who do online learn less and don't pick up the same information they'd learn in a lecture or a regular classroom setting. I have learned alot about the things that can make a student miss school. There are many valid reasons as to why students miss school. I have learned alot about ewu library with scholarly research this term and how to convey my words in different writing styles we have written with

In conclusion there are some gaps in the research provided throughout the course mostly just with sources being closer to the topic or relating to it more. There were a few sources that only had a paragraph or two of valuable information that in the end were not used at all. This topic should impact more than just school attendance. It should affect everything with the reason for missing, and the reasons behind why the student could make it. Even the ways to fix those problems to make it so students would have to miss less school for those reasons.
