I have used the 'Jigsaw Reading' strategy where each group of students became experts on different text sections and taught others by presenting their section. This collaborative approach kept everyone engaged and responsible for reading, teaching, and making comprehension more meaningful. It also helped with long texts I knew all students needed to read, but we did not have the time. Has anyone ever used the 'Jigsaw Reading' strategy?

An alternate reading strategy that I have experienced that was more effective that Round Reading was Choral Reading. I prefer this method Round Robin because it allows students to read together. By them reading together and right away, they aren’t sitting and waiting as they would with Round Robin. Choral Reading keeps students engaged and I believe it builds their confidence. Choral Reading allows the shy students to engage in reading without feeling like all eyes are on them.

Lea

The alternative strategy that I have found my students respond best to are: "Teacher Read Alouds." It is through teacher read aloud's that I am able to engage the students by having conversations about the various components of the read aloud (i.e. character(s), setting(s), problem, sequencing of events, mood, purpose, etc.) I have found when I read they are more engaged and focused as opposed to losing stamina or attention when reading independently more specifically with the struggling readers.

I enjoy echo reading because it helps improve reading fluency, confidence, and comprehension by allowing students to listen to a fluent reader and then repeat the text. It supports struggling readers by offering scaffolded practice, enhances pronunciation and expression, and reinforces vocabulary through repeated exposure. This technique also develops listening skills and keeps students actively engaged in the learning process.

Mitchell

The teacher read aloud helps the struggling reader to stay on track. During this reading, there are small groups of students who are reading text on their instructional level with the teacher from the teacher. Also, another more effective form of reading in my class is utilizing digital reading while using graphic organizers. Students are able summarize and to analyze the text using story maps. Hence, using the strategies above rather than Round Robin has been more effective within my class for helping students gain a deeper understanding of text.

Instead of randomly calling on students, this method gives students a clear purpose for reading and allows them some control over participation. It reduces anxiety by allowing volunteers, it encourages active listening and connects reading to comprehension goals instead of just oral fluency, it also allows differentiated participation where students can read shorter or easier sessions if needed which is good for me being that I am co-taught.
