Now I practice Spanish once a day and try to incorporate it more into my life by speaking Spanglish when I can.
My family has experienced both positive and negative aspects because of language. My grandparents and older familial members remember the treatment they had received for speaking Spanish, but they also always remained connected. As a fluent English speaker, he asked to be placed into an ordinary classes but due to school policy, he was kept in remedial classes. It’s okay if I say it. Both my parents speak Espańol, yet my first language is English. Due to growing up with a studder I decided to learn Espańol at 16. I’m proud to be Latino and mitad Peruano. Speaking another language opens so much doors and opportunities. I was put in Spanish classes throughout my elementary years. We were known as the “Spanish kids.” That class was the only class we interacted with, so we built a tight knit community. When I went to middle school, there was a dilemma of who I was. I tried to assimilate to the school culture. I didn’t speak Spanish as much. I didn’t fit with the Mexican kids who played soccer and talked Spanish all the time. I didn’t fit with the “normal” kids who only spoke English. I found my group with a kid who had the same elementary Spanish class with me, and two girls who were diverse in their own way.
