-The crusades were a series of religious wars
-Pope Urban II was the one to call for the first crusades, and did so to help the Byzantines and free Jerusalem
-Jerusalem was considered holy to three religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity
-The main goal was to recapture the Holy Land, but there were some unsaid goals set by European lords and clergy
-Merchants profited from the Crusades, and the Church saw it as an opportunity to rid the knights who fought each other
-The power of the Pope was weakened after the failure of the crusades, as regaining the Holy Land was through to bring christ back through rebirth
-They are called 'successful failures," because even though they lost, there were some benefits, such as: expanded trade routes between Europe and Southwest Asia, new goods from Southwest Asia, and it gave women a chance to manage estates and have more responsibilities

The first major spreading of the religion happened when the Frankish king Clovis converted in 496. Clovis was a pagan king, so when he converted so did his subjects. Charlemagne was the second major influencer of christianity. He fought a 30 year war against the pagan Saxons in Germany. He forced all of them to convert or die. Charlemagne also conquered the Lombards, the Avars, and Bavaria. He forced all of his subjects to convert. The Crusades to the Holy Land of course also spread the Christianity by retaking old Christian lands and spreading the relgion.
