Stalin's 5 year plan to rebuild the country saw the USSR become a world superpower, but at the cost of many Russian lives. The government controlled the education system and taught only what was useful to the state. For example, evolution was believed to go against Marxist beliefs but other sciences in astronomy and engineering were taught. All religious groups were persecuted, especially the Russian Orthodox Church.

In an effort to cleanse the Soviet Union from enemies to the state, Stalin ordered the arrest of people of all social classes who were rumored to be conspiring against him. People could get arrested for minor things and it was common for people to be taken away because of a dispute with a friend or neighbor. Most people were then sent away to labor camps or executed, resulting in the death of 8-13 million people, including nearly his entire political and military staff.
