Advantages To GMO Chicken

Chicken is genetically modified for human consumptions. Genetically modified chickens are most commonly split up into two groups the "broilers and the "layers". For layers the chickens are genetically modified to lay a greater amount of eggs, according to one green planet, the layers can lay up to 250 eggs in a day. However one green planet is very biased to being against genetically modified chicken, therefore making it possible for 250 to be a exaggerated amount. More amount of eggs allow there to be more supply for customers to consume. The "boilers" phenotypes are changes to have bigger breasts and more meat. Again this benefits suppliers and consumers, providing bigger and more appealing chickens.

The main disadvantage to genetically modified chicken is the cruelty the chickens must endure. For example, chickens are genetically modified to have more meat on them and bigger chests, the FDA states that chickens with genetically modified breasts cannot sustain this breast size, furthermore is cause their organs to begin failing. This is a great threat to the chickens as it can be the cause of a lot of problems such as heart attacks. A farmer reporting to the FDA released a statement that he looses up to 1000 chickens a day due to organ failure.

Scientists use modern technology to genetically engineer chickens. Scientists implant genes and change DNA to change the phenotypes of chickens, increasing breast size, more meat, more eggs produced, etc. For examples, using genes from bigger chicken breeds like the jersey giant, brahma, cochin, etc. and using these genes to change the genetic makeups of more common and easy to breed chickens, thereby changing the phenotypes. Chickens are prime for genetic modification, according to upc, "Chickens are suitable for gene manipulation because, unlike other domestic animals, they mature quickly, and a single bird can have thousands of offspring. Foreign genes need only to be inserted into one generation, which passes the genes on."

Who Benefits from Genetically Modified Chicken

Suppliers and consumers obtain the most benefit from genetically modified chickens. The suppliers get more produce and more appealing produce. For example the chickens that are genetically modified to produce more eggs, allow suppliers to receive more eggs to sell, thereby also benefiting the suppliers. This is because the more supply there is the less demand there is, furthermore making it cheaper for people to buy eggs. Having bigger chickens also benefits the suppliers. When the chicken is bigger, it is then more appealing to consumers. Consumers then buy more chickens and at higher prices, giving the suppliers more revenue.

Genetically modified chicken can pose a problem is there is possible harm for humans. Changing and altering chickens that we consume is dangerous. Genetically modified chicken is eaten all over the world. If a problem does arrive it could easily spread across the human populations. That is why extra caution needs to be taken with altering and inserting genes, and examinations taking place to ensure the safety of the public.

Instead of using GMO chickens, the focus could be placed on good breeding and raising. Giving chickens better feed in order to naturally improve their egg production or growth in size. In our modern time we even use Genetically modified feed. Feed that gives more nutrition to chickens. Instead on focusing on modifying chickens, we could instead look for an alternative with chicken feed. Possibly finding ways in feed to enhance physical traits.
