Please look up "existentialism." Once you have done so, think about how Meursault reacts when he learns of his mother’s death. Using what your found in your research, how is his response existential? Please integrate one quote from the text to support your answer. by Vannah Scarborough

A philosophy based around the word existential which is to be concerned with one existence especially the human existence. Meursault reacts in an existential manner in the way he never truly thinks about the specificity of his mother death. The opening sentence "Maman died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know" (1). Mersault has no great reaction of his mothers death and treats it as if it is another event nothing significant and he never recall any memories before the nursing home involving his mother.

Existentialism is an approach to life that centers around the will of an individual. It proposes that the life of a person is influenced only by their decisions. Meursalt is a natural existentialist. He is influenced by very little, does only what he deems acceptable, and is allergic to emotions. In Chapter 1, directly after the death of his mother, he remarks "The woman kept on crying. It surprised me, because I didn't know who she was. I wished I didn't have to listen to her anymore. But I didn't dare say anything" (10).

After returning home from his mothers funeral, Meaursalt finds himself dormant and back in his house, stating “It occurred to me that anyway one more Sunday was over, that Maman was buried now, that I was going back to work, and that really nothing had changed” (24). Meaursalt has little to no reaction to his mother’s death. Shortly after returning, he hits the beach, meets a girl, goes out to eat, and lives husband life normally, completely disregarding any form of a grieving process. Existentialism describes the theory that humans determine their own lives, and that there is no outside force guiding them along. Furthermore, it describes being truly alone in life, something most people don’t like to think about. In the eyes of an existentialist, Measaults reaction comes from a place of indifference. It does not matter that his mother died because there is nothing else there. There’s no afterlife to look forward to, there is just an end. This is a fate that we all eventually will meet. He has no reason to care.

Existentialism is the idea that free will is a defining factor of human life. It somewhat belittles science because it prioritizes experiences over scientific analysis of events. Camus was very caught up with himself. His mother died, but to him all he felt like doing it was “going back to work [because], really, nothing had changed”(24). His response is existential because he does not care about the death of his own mother because it does not affect his day to day life.

It starts with individuality and authenticity. A quote from the text is, "really, nothing had changed." Mersault is unable to find meaning in his life, just like Albert Camus.
