I worked in IT & Finance in the private sector but yearned for the opportunity to work in education. During college, I had interned at the Arizona Department of Education, which stirred my interest in education policy. I teach Business & Finance at Morris K Udall Middle School, in the Isaac School District. Our district is based in Maryvale, one of the urban villages of Phoenix. In addition to my teaching at MKU, I teach coding and programming at various Phoenix Public Library branches. My teaching position is unique. I teach Business & Finance in a grade level that normally does not encounter such topics until grades 9-12. In my class, we cover the subjects of Marketing, Economics, and Personal Finance. These subjects are so pervasive in society that it makes the content relational and engaging to students when they can easily witness the outcomes in the real-world. Take, for instance, the proliferation of the gig economy, or automation, which are both topics we have covered and discussed in detail. Many students are noticing seismic changes that are occurring in our economy due to technological progress.
