I found this quote interesting because it is such a big contrast between what we encourage mothers to teach their daughters now. Today, women are encouraged to be strong, smart and independent. It's inspiring to see how far women have come in the past century.

"Myrtle raised her eyebrows in despair at the shiftless of the lower orders. 'These people! You have to keep after them all the time.' She looked at me and laughed pointlessly." (32)

This quote stood out to me because of how Myrtles attitude is. Myrtle believes that now that she is spending time with the rich, she must treat those "below" her with disrespect to be accepted, even though Myrtle is one of these people. She doesn't show sympathy for them, even though she knows what it is like to be them. Myrtle is trying to fit in.

Jordan says that after Nick asks what would happen if she met someone just as careless as her. Jordan is suggesting that she wants the people around her to be responsible so she doesn't have to be, and she is free to do what she pleases. I think this conversation sums up Jordan's selfish attitude.

"'You're looking at my cuff buttons.' I hadn't been looking at them, but I did now. They were composed of oddly familiar pieces of ivory. 'Finest specimen of human molars.'" (72)

Mr. Wolfsheim interested me from the beginning, but this quote particularly made me think. My first question was: "why is he telling Nick this?", also, "what is the importance?" and "why is he wearing teeth for cuff links?" I think he brought up the teeth to Nick as a subtle way of showing him of what he is capable of. This gives a bit more insight into who Gatsby surrounds himself with, and what kind of business he may be in to.

I chose this quote because I think this realization is truly the turning point of the book. Gatsby works toward this moment for years, and although he may not want to admit it, it doesn't quite meet his expectations.

I chose this quote because it confirms my assumptions from last chapter. Gatsby has been working so hard to go back to the way things were with him and Daisy, but he doesn't realize that things can never be the same. Daisy is living a completely different life than she was 5 years ago, she has a husband and daughter of her own, and it is completely unrealistic of him to believe that Daisy could leave her very comfortable life to be with him.

"I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time." (131)

I think this quote perfectly portrays Tom's carelessness. Tom thinks that he can excuse his reckless actions by stating that he loves Daisy in his heart. Tom thinks more about his indulgences than about his wifes feelings.

I picked this quote because I believe it has a strong meaning. Gatsby dedicated a large portion of his life to reconnecting with Daisy, and built up all these ideas in his head, but never got to fulfill them.
