John Davison Rockefeller was an American Industrialist and Philanthropist in the 19th century. He was born in Richford, New York on July 8, 1839. He started his first oil refinery in Cleveland, Ohio and later incorporated the Standard Oil Company in 1870. In 1882, he had a close monopoly of the oil business in the United States. Eventually, his business practices led to the Antitrust Laws which made all monopolistic behaviors illegal. He spent the rest of his days as a thriving philanthropist, giving money to create colleges such as the University of Chicago. Rockefeller died in 1937 in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Rockefeller's Industry

After opening his first oil refinery in 1863, he decided that he wanted to turn his attention to the oil business full time. In 1870, Rockefeller and his associates opened and incorporated the Standard Oil Company. This company prospered and eventually started to buy out other competitors. Just after two years, Standard Oil Company controlled many of the refineries in Cleveland. Rockefeller used the size and success to make deals with different railroads to transport the oil. Also, Standard got into the business of purchasing terminals and pipelines to transport their own goods as well. Standard Oil Company even bought acres of forest for lumber and drilling which then blocked competitor's pipelines. After Rockefeller had a grip on this industry, it lead to America's first monopoly or trust just after a decade.

At the age of 16, Rockefeller started his first real job as "an assistant bookkeeper with Hewitt & Tuttle, commission merchants and produce shippers". At age 20 in 1859, Rockefeller and a business partner created their own commission firm. And in 1863, Rockefeller and several associates enrolled in the bustling new oil industry by investing in a Cleveland refinery. This led to 1870 when Rockefeller and his partners established the Standard Oil Company. Rockefeller was the companies president and biggest shareholder. Standard controlled 90% or more of the refineries and pipelines by the 1880s. The Standard Oil Company obtained a monopoly in the industry by buying competing refineries and expanding companies for marketing its products around the world.

In his later days, Rockefeller donated the bulk of his money to "educational, religious and scientific causes". He retired from the oil business in the 1890s and many say he was inspired by Andrew Carnegie as he became a very well known philanthropist. He donated money for the creation and establishment of the University of Chicago and also the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research. This is now known as Rockefeller University. He also established the Rockefeller foundation which has supported many causes and has many charitable events.
