Symbol: The Mechanical Hound

"The Mechanical Hound slept but did not sleep, lived but did not live in its gently humming, gently vibrating, softly illuminated kennel in a dark corner of the firehouse" (Bradbury 24). In this scene, Montag observes the mechanical hound inside of the firehouse, and he considers that the hound could be almost alive in a sense, in spite of the fact that the hound is only a "dead" machine that is not physically classified as being "alive." However, it could still be argued that the mechanical hound appears to be more "alive" than a person such as Mildred, even though both the mechanical hound and Mildred only "function" and mindlessly process the information that is metaphorically shoved down their throats. This is because the mechanical hound, at the very least, still seems to have some sort of consciousness since it seems to "dislike" Montag, and Captain Beatty even indirectly reveals that the hound most likely detected Montag's guilt.

"Books aren't people. You read and I look all around, but there isn't anybody! . . . My 'family' is people. They tell me things: I laugh, they laugh! And the colors!"(Bradbury 73). Mildred is extremely attached to television and always seems to be fixated to the mindless programs without consideration for anything else that could be of value such as books, children, or her relationship with Montag. Mildred spends almost all of her time watching TV programs or listening to her radio in order to try to occupy herself. Even though she is alive in a physical sense, Mildred carries herself in a way that could almost be considered "dead" because she only seems to "function" without thinking and appears to have no grasp of complicated human concepts such as emotions.

Theme: Dead vs. Alive

There are several examples throughout the story that display the theme of "dead vs. alive," though the mechanical hound and Mildred are especially prominent symbols of this theme. However, aspects of the theme can also be seen in the society itself, as most of the people only operate mindlessly without thinking or feeling, just like machines.
