Much of the social issues in America around 1865-1910 had to do with slavery, women rights, immigration, and other issues. America had just finished the civil war, and the slaves in the south were given their "Freedom". However this was not the reality of the situation, with many African Americans and Blacks having many issues with the southern states. At this time Women still did not have the right to vote, and were viewed lower then a man. Basically at this point, people struggled unless they were rich white men. People are viewed lesser if not white, and blacks would not be deemed fully "Equal" until 1964-1965.

The years between 1865 and 1910 marked the Realist and Naturalist movements in American literature as the nation shifted from an idealistic to a realistic perspective of life, largely a result of the Civil War. Realism focuses on the mundane, everyday experiences in life. Writers in this genre include Charlotte Perkins Gilman, William Dean Howells, Kate Chopin, and Mark Twain.

A branch of Realism, Naturalism also depicts people in real situations, but emphasizes that larger forces such as nature, social structures, and heredity shape individuals and their fate. Naturalist literature was often used to highlight various social issues, with common themes including determinism and survival. Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, and Jack London are a few of the key Naturalist writers during this time.
