This show is a tradition in Vietnam since the 11th century. It consists of wooden puppets that dance in a waist-deep pool controlled by people that hide behind a screen. When the tradition first began, people would control the puppets over the flooded rice fields as a way of entertainment and joy.
An orchestra plays along while the show is performed. The orchestra is composed of drums, vocals, cymbals, horns, wooden bells, a monochord named Dan Bau, bamboo flutes, and gongs. The lyrics tell stories that are to be interpreted by the puppets and the singers sometimes interact with the puppets during the songs, shouting words at them according to the story being told. The stories are about their history or simply about their day-to-day living.
____________________________________________________________
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ajfQpN-ZXI

Song Lang

This is a clapper idiophone used to have a “click” sound when the small beater strikes the slit wooden gong, giving the songs a rhythmic cycle. Song Langs (pronounced “shong longs”)are decorated with beautiful drawings, mostly flowers, that shows its Chinese influence.

Dan Bau

This is a monochord instrument in a zither form made of dour parts. This instrument is believed to be present in the Vietnamese culture since its dynasty period. The Dan Bau is played on the pentatonic scale and has a smooth, as well as a vibrating sound. The instrument is commonly played by blinded people, but it is still not easy to be played, requiring much precision by the player.

Dan Tranh

This is a plucked zither from Vietnam with 16 steel strings, although some may have 17, 19 or 21 strings. It is also played on the pentatonic scale. Following the Chinese tradition, Dan Tranhs are also decorated on their sides.
____________________________________________________________
http://www.lafairy-sails.com/en/blog/dan-bau-a-vienamese-magical-traditional-music-instrument.htm

Vietnamese chordophones have high frets and looser strings that give the stringed instruments a tone-bending and smooth sound. Their music is usually on a pentatonic scale and they somehow resembles the raga system of South Asia, however, certain pitches are more western related what gives Vietnamese music this complex sound.

When it comes to the beat, Vietnamese style resembles the tala style from India that consists in cycles accentuated by the song lang, having the last beat to be the most accented. Also, the Vietnamese style has such a rhythmic syncopation on its songs and a free rhythmic improvisation on most of the songs, specially on the beginning.

Its music was a mix of Indian, Chinese and indigenous tribes with a lot of influence from the West Rock of the 60s and 70s.

The modern music of Cambodia is highly rhythmic and has great influence of pop music.
