Hello everyone,

I’am your second teacher alongside Marriëtte I’m not from UvA or VU, yet I’m indirectly involved in teachers’ professional development as an educational consultant, guide, assessor, and coach for both universities. I also work 2 days a week at HvA, Faculty Technology & Engineering to establish a LLD program for the faculty.

I studied Educational Science and work as an educational consultant on a project basis. My career in education began as a Spanish teacher (my first degree). Since then, I’ve taught various subjects, developed and implemented policies for student guidance programs, worked as a student mentor and teamleader of study advisors. For the last ten years, I’ve primarily been developing modules and (re)designing curricula. My expertise lies in assessment, quality assurance, and guiding teams through educational innovations. I look forward to work and learn with you during the STQ trajectory. Outside of work, I also enjoy spending time with my family & friends, watching art movies, reading, cooking, yoga and biking through Amsterdam.

I will be supervising this Spring 2025 group together with Natascha. I am a philosopher by training and teach philosophy courses at Amsterdam University College. 4 years ago, I started as STQ coach, for the English VU/UvA group. It is enriching to do this work profiting from a long academic career, and after several managerial positions. I am fond of teaching, working with students, looking for fruitful working forms. In my free time I like to play the piano. And I love to spend time with my dear ones.

My STQ project is titled "Reimagining Software-Intensive Education in Light of General Availability of Generative AI Technology".

My STQ project aims to redefine the scientific learning line of our BA Archaeology programme, to create more engagement and practical opportunities for students, and work with my scientific colleagues to address the particular teaching demands of archaeological science in these challenging academic times. I look forward to meeting you all!

The title of my STQ project is Curious Curriculum. An inquiry into the place of curiosity in the development of media studies learning trajectories at the individual, course, and program levels.

During the STQ programme I would like to work on the project looking into to exploring opportunities for the economics department to be involved in executive (post-initial) education. The objective of my STQ project would be developing a module for professionals and policy makers interested in Economic Policy analysis and embedding this module into existing VU executive education programmes.

I‘m Patrizia Hoyer, Assistant Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Department of Organization Sciences. My research focuses broadly on career identity and employee wellbeing. I teach in 3 different programs at Bachelor and Master level, and I currently supervise 4 PhD students. I am the program coordinator for 2 master programs and in my STQ project I will work on integrating 'professional skills' into the curriculum of the Master Program 'Culture, Organization and Management‘.

Normally I would introduce myself as a 'dog mama', but last month we had to say goodbye to our best buddy Diego way too early. Otherwise my two girls (almost 4 years and the other one 5 months old) and husband keep me on my toes. We aim to spend as many days as possible at the seaside. I have lived in 5 other countries before moving to the Netherlands, which is our home of choice. Happy to be here and to meet you all soon. 🤗

My main learning objective for the program is to develop a plan on how to prepare Master’s students better for the implementation of their thesis project and the writing of their thesis. My favorite leisure activities are meeting friends for coffee, walking in the parks of Amsterdam, and cooking with my partner.

Hi, my name is Marcel Oberlaender. Since 2016, I am leading the Research Group ‘In Silico Brain Sciences’ at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Neurobiology of Behavior in Bonn. Recently, I was appointed to Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Neurophysiology at the Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research (CNCR) at the VU Amsterdam.

I was born in Blankenburg, (East) Germany, in 1980. Between 2000 and 2006, I studied Physics in Heidelberg. In 2003, I spent one year at the University of Melbourne in Australia. At this time, I became fascinated by the field of Neuroscience – an interest I pursued further in 2006 during my diploma thesis with Bert Sakmann (Nobel laureate for Physiology in 1991) at the MPI for Medical Research in Heidelberg. I stayed with Sakmann and moved with him to the MPI of Neurobiology in Munich to do my doctorate degree, which he received in 2009. Thereafter, I became a post-doctoral fellow in the Sakmann department at the newly established Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience in the US. In 2012, I established the Computational Neuroanatomy Group at the MPI for Biological Cybernetics in Tuebingen, which I led for four years. During this time, I continued to work as a project leader at the Max Planck Florida Institute. After receiving a conspicuous grant from the European Research Council in 2015, I moved to the MPI for Neurobiology of Behavior.

My research aims to unravel how the mammalian brain transforms sensory signals into perception, and ultimately into behavior. For this purpose, my lab develops realistic models of the rodent brain. Based on these models, we perform simulations to disentangle in silico – and then test via manipulations in vivo – how the interplay between cells and circuits implements sensation, perception, and behavior.

My STQ project seeks to establish a ‘computational learning line’ into the curriculum of the Master of Neuroscience program of the VU Amsterdam.

My favorite leisure activity – apart from my research – is to play with my two little girls (1 and 6) and my old little dog (15).

I am Özlem Terzi and I am an assistant professor in International Relations at the department of Political Science and Public Administration at the VU. I am the politics-track coordinator of the Philosophy, Politics, Economics (PPE) programme and am teaching also in Bachelor and Master programmes of political science. I am co-supervising two PhD candidates.

My research is on the external relations of the European Union with two different focal points: the role of emotions in EU foreign policy and politics of green transition in the Arctic region. I am currently coordinating an EU-funded teaching and research project in collaboration with the University of Lapland in Finland, aimed at Master’s and PhD students. The project is called REPAIR and focuses on the protection of the environment, security and Indigenous Peoples’ rights in the (European) Arctic region. This project is my inspiration for the SKO project.

In the SKO trajectory, I aim to make some of the gains from the REPAIR project permanent in our Master’s programme after our funding ends in summer 2025. I look forward to learning about the financial and legal frameworks that (Master’s) programmes run according to in the NL.

Also within the SKO trajectory I would like to learn about developing a creative outlook to see alternative pathways to a goal and also about effective communication that balances flexibility and assertiveness in pursuing a project.

I am of Turkish origin and I have lived in four different countries before arriving at the VU. I live in the Netherlands since 2018. I have a husband and two daughters, aged 12 and 20. I love travelling and reading travel literature. I also like learning about the literatures of countries I have travelled to.

Our department runs two Master in Law (=LLM) programs on Law & Tech (one in English and one in Dutch), as well as LLMs in EU law and International law. My SKO project aims at establishing a parallel track that can be taken by students of the Law & Tech LLM (and maybe extended to those of the other LLMs later on). In this parallel track, students from Law & Tech and students from CS and AI would teach each other fundamental notions of AI, programming, and law.

I am Italian and before moving to the NL I lived in London and in the North of Mexico (Chihuahua). In my previous life I worked in International Law Firms, and used to be a singer. Now my main hobby is sewing (but I do not accept requests for hemming jeans! :D ).

my name is Jan Engelmann. I am Professor of Neuroeconomics at the Amsterdam School of Economics. I oversee the Master in Business Economics, which has three tracks: Managerial Economics, Neuroeconomics and Sustainability. I studied Psychology in the UK and the US, then did a bunch of postdocs (the longest in Switzerland) and ended up in an economics department to create a master track on Neuroeconomics. My research focuses on trust, theory of mind, and emotions, how they relate to economic decisions and how this is reflected in the brain.

For my STQ project I would like to develop a course that teaches students how to tackle difficulties and challenges that naturally come along in life by teaching them tools from Positive Psychology.
