Peer Support Arrangements

Supporting students with disabilities in the classroom should be assisted by other students. We want them involved and included with their peers as much as possible. One way to tackle this problem head on is to include the students in general education classroom settings. Allowing these students a chance at a general education classroom learning is actually overall more beneficial socially, educationally, and necessary. having a one on one aide has shown to impeded the education and social interaction in the classroom. With Peer Support Arrangements it provides the student with developmental or intellectual disabilities a way to engage and create friendships with other classmates. The peers without disabilities also show improvement with this arrangement.

Peer Tutoring -

One of the more beneficial ways students with disabilities can learn and grow is through peer tutoring. Peer tutoring provides one on on support and instruction. They are learning skills, techniques and problem solving from classmates or older students who have done the same work. This provides a more comfortable environment for them to express their struggles. They can also build a bond and or friendship with their tutor that also helps them to boost confidence and moral while learning and playing in the classroom.

Cooperative Learning -
Cooperative learning provide a small and mixed group setting for students to learn from each other. This allows for a learning setting that is not competitive with mutual support and shared accomplishments. The group works together at a sick goal and not only one succeed they all succeed. For students with intellectual and developmental disabilities this provides a safe and supportive group. All of the members work off of each other and cooperate to share accomplishments to finish their goals.

Peer Buddy Systems -

A great way to provide intellectual teaching during a non-structured classroom setting is by allowing the peers to provide, peer buddy support systems. Peer buddy systems help with social interaction and communication between Pierce and also encourage communication with the teacher and or staff. There are more formal and structured peer buddy programs in secondary schools that are more involved in inclusive classes.
