Preformationism is the historical look at the way children were perceived and subsequently treated. Children were seen as small adults. Pictures in history show children in the likeness of adults instead of what children actually look like.
Children were not only seen and portrayed as tiny adults in art, they were also treated as adults. Children were sent off to apprentice at the young age of 6 or 7. Children were later sent off to learn trades around age 12, and with time education became more important than learning a trade and children focused more on that.

Locke's environmentalism theory basically states that children are born with blank slates. Children know nothing and everything that they do learn is taught and influenced by the world around them, i.e. their environment molds their minds.
Locke also theorized that we are able with time and age to develop our own ideas based on what we have observed and been taught. His theory also states that we learn through association, repetition, imitation, rewards and punishments.

Rousseau had his own ideas about how children's minds are filled with knowledge. He believed that children should absorb knowledge through nature not by adults filling their heads with their knowledge.
Rousseau also believed that their are 4 main stages in a child's development, the first stage being infancy (birth to 2 years) where the experiences consist of curiosity, pleasure and pain. The second stage is childhood (2-12) marked by independence and knowledge. The third stage is late childhood (12-15) the transitional stage before adolescence. And the last stage being adolescence, marked by social activity, puberty and emotional changes
