Every student is unique in their own ways with different interests and identities, affectting how they engage in learning. These can include race, culture, language, gender, and disability which all should be valued and respected in a classroom. Because every students' interests and connections to their identities change over time and are unique to each individual, it's important to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels seen and included.

Learning takes time and effort from both the students and teacher. Motivation is seen in many different ways depending on the students and depends on the situation or circumstance. In order to help students keep going and stay motivated in their work, teachers need to provide meaningful goals, support, encouragement, opportunities for teamwork, and give helpful feedback in the classroom. These strategies can help all learners stay focused and feel connected to their learning.

Understanding and managing emotions is an important part of learning and growing both in and out of the classroom. Some students will learn these skills on their own or at home, but many students are in need of guidance and support. Teaching emotional skills clearly and with intention can impact and support a student. This is especially needed in a classroom because it is an environment designed to support different needs.

Learning cannot occur if students can't see, hear, or understand the information being taught. To make learning accessible information shpuld be given and taught in a variety of ways such as using sound, visuals, or touch. This allows students to recieve and connect with the content and material in different ways. While also including diversity in experiences in what we teach, this way students can see themselves reflected and learn about others.

Students understand information in different ways and what makes sense to one person might confuse another student. Every student has diffrent experiences that shape their viewpoints and understandings. Based on a students prior knowledge of a topic, their background, culture, and infulences each student interprets information differently. By using multiple ways to show and explain ideas, all students can understand and connect with the learning.

Learning is an active process where students make connections, ask questions, and build on what they already know. Working together with others helps students share and collaborate ideas while challenge each other’s thinking, to develop a deeper understanding. Since everyone has different backgrounds and ways of learning, teaching should include different formats and supports to help all students understand and gain knowledge.

Learning tools and classroom spaces should be designed with flexibility such as using voice commands, special keyboards, or adjustable furniture this way every student can interact and participate in a way that works best for them.

There is not one single way of expressing ideas. Some methods works well for every student or every type of learning. Some formats may actually make it harder for certain learners to show what they know. It’s important to give students different ways to share their thinking like writing, speaking, drawing, or using technology. This is a great way to ensure every student has a fair chance to communicate and succeed in the classroom.

A key part of learning is helping students develop executive function skills by setting goals, making plans, and adjusting strategies as they go. These skills help students find their purpose, stay focused, and use the most of the tools and resources provided. The UDL framework supports this by making basic tasks easier so students can focus more on thinking and planning. But also teaches strategies to strengthen their executive skills over time.
