After teaching a math unit, the teacher can arrange for a guest to come into the classroom that uses the skills taught in the unit for work. The guest can explain how math is used at work and then, request "help" from the students for a work-related problem that needs to be resolved. Students can work collaboratively in groups to solve the problem. The guest can give feedback to each group on their solution. The class, the teacher, and the guest can walk through the best way to solve related "real-world" problems using the math.

Sociocultural - having a guest speaker interact with the class, students working in groups

Constructivist - students use knowledge constructed from prior learning to solve a problem

- Higher order functions develop out of social interaction first, then individually.
- Social learning asserts that human behavior is learned through observation, imitation, and modeling.
- Through participation in activities that require cognitive and communicative functions, children are drawn into the use of these functions in ways that nurture and scaffold them.
- Cognitive development happens within Zones of Proximal Development (ZPD). ZPD is a model that showcases what a student can do and what they can do with help compared to what they cannot do.

- Learning is constructed, students build new knowledge upon the foundation of previous learning.
- Prior knowledge influences what new or modified knowledge an individual will construct from new learning experiences.
- This theory states that learning is an active process of creating meaning from different experiences.
- This theory encourages and accept student autonomy and initiative as well as trying to use raw data and primary sources, in addition to manipulative, interactive, and physical materials.
- When assigning tasks to the students, use cognitive terminology such as "classify," "analyze," "predict," and "create."

Working with paper bills, students go grocery shopping. They pick out items from the store as a group and return back to calculate their bill. This would require students to use previously learned addition skills and monetary calculation.

Constructivist - Have students create an itemized bill of several items they could buy at the grocery store such as candy, food, etc.

Sociocultural - The students would get into groups and be given a certain amount of money. With this, they decide what is bought, how to calculate their bill, and showcase their results.

Students go as a class to a local farm. There they learn specific farm-related activities such as milking a cow, sheering sheep, and collecting eggs.

Constructivist - Students would come up with the best ways they could do these tasks without help from the teacher/farmer such as sheering sheep. Trying out scissors versus electric shavers and seeing what the students come up with without actually sheering the sheep.

Sociocultural - Students figure it out as one large group how to sheer these sheep with the tools provided.
