Whitman (Old)School Climate Reflections by Alicia Duell

Answer 2-3 of the following questions about your own elementary/middle school: 1.How supportive and caring were most of the teachers? 2. Did you feel a sense of safety from violence and bullying? 3. How connected did most students feel to the school? 4. Was your school culturally diverse? If so, did everyone feel welcomed and celebrated?

1. Teachers were very caring and always ask how I was and how my family was. 2. I was lucky I never experienced bullying directly and did not feel unsafe as a kid. 3. Students were connected to the school, lots of participation for PTO/school events.
4. My school was culturally diverse and our principal would greet all of us at the foot of the stairs by name. We always had awards ceremonies to celebrate hard work. We had "International Days" festivals where cultures in our school were explored and celebrated.

Columbine happened when I was in middle school so we had multiple discussions around the topic, but overall I felt very safe and did not see or experience much bullying
3.

My elementary experience was very unique. I was born and raised in Chicago and attended school here until 2nd grade, being so young I don't remember much, but liking my school very much. I attended a private bilingual elementary school in Mexico from 3-6 grades which felt very safe and caring. My school community there was beyond nothing I had ever experience. I then moved back to Chicago and lived on south side where I finished grades 7th and 8th. My school experience then was shocking and terrifying. Gangs, drugs, and violence were seen on a daily basis.

3. I felt that my elementary/middle school set the culture to have a lot of pride in our school. There was always new incentives to make our school a better place.
4. My school was very diverse. We had a mix of almost every financial status class, we had a mix of every race and it was pretty even percentages across the board . I was also part of a dual-language program to which half of my class was native Spanish speakers and the other half was native English speakers.

My teachers were all very supportive and caring. The main elementary school I went to in Chicago was very culturally diverse and was in a rough area with lots of gang activity nearby. It was not always safe. Too many stories to tell in this space...
