Small Town - Growth Set

Good afternoon everyone! I grew up in a very small mid-central town called Montello. I've attached a picture so you could see how isolated we truly were. Given this isolation, you could also guess the diversity within this community was limited. The most "diversity" we got, was those who were related and those who were not. We lacked representation across race, ethnicity and backgrounds. Despite now living near Milwaukee and embracing the variety of cultures and experiences in the area, I have to admit, sometimes I still have moments that I say to myself, "You have lived a sheltered life." Given this, I truly act and speak from the heart of being open to everyone, their backgrounds and what they can bring to the table, because let's face it, we have a great deal we can learn from one another. I am excited to say, I feel like I have blossomed tremendously & have certainly been educated since my humble beginning of life in small town Montello and I cannot wait to explore things further in this class. See you tomorrow!

I grew up not far from Milwaukee, however my city completely lacked any diversity as far as open thought processes, ethnicity, race, culture, and, to a large extent, religious beliefs. Thankfully, I had several family members who grew up in the Madison area and were exposed to different thoughts and cultures. My parents brought us up in a loving and open environment where we were encouraged to accept everyone. I have 3 siblings, 2 of them are adopted yet I don't think of them in that light. They are a part of me as is my other sibling. One of my siblings is from South Korea and one from Mexico. I have witnessed much hate, prejudice, potentially fear, and ignorance through my siblings eyes. Our city was not an accepting one. Even the police department was largely judgemental at that time and quick to point fingers at individuals who weren't caucasian. It soured me for a long time when I would think about where I grew up. Thankfully, there has been gradual change and the place has become more accepting of multiple cultures, etc. I'm excited to be a part of this class, especially as it pertains to discussion and hearing all of the different viewpoints.
Heather

I grew up in a rural farm community in Northern Illinois during the 1980's. Diversity was never discussed in school or at home, and when I graduated high school in 1993 I decided to go to a private, liberal arts college in very diverse city (Rockford, IL). My classmates and instructors were from all across the globe and we had seminars devoted to cultural diversity throughout my time in college. I was a senator in college and a math/science tutor, while also participating in Habitat for Humanity and after-school reading programs at predominantly Hispanic and African-American elementary schools. My time in college during the mid-1990's prepared me to embrace diversity and appreciate everyone for who they were. I have been a college instructor since May 2000 and have taught in a variety of academic settings in a variety of places around the country. I am pleased to see an emphasis on awareness of diversity today, as many people have not had the experiences and opportunities to be exposed to different cultures and lifestyles.
Kevin Yocum

I teach Anatomy/Physiology and have always approached the delivery of the material with an emphasis on clinical applicability, which includes discussing the diversity of patients, peers/colleagues, and other medical professionals. Students are very receptive and interested in having compassion for all patients, regardless of background. I guess I am wondering if our students are required to take or participate in diversity training, or if there are specific classes where diversity is discussed. Or is it up to each instructor, regardless of the course, to integrate diversity awareness into the course curriculum.
Kevin Yocum

In my adult life I have been associated with the fire service as a volunteer, paid on call, and career firefighter. The make up of the departments I have been a member of has varied greatly. The rural departments were much different than the urban department I worked for. Volunteer - paid on call departments were happy to welcome anyone who could offer their time and skills to help in the community where they lived, regardless
