Learning Ally Audio helps students who struggle with reading (like dyslexia) have a customizable reading experience. This helps them develop reading fluency in all grade levels. Textbooks are also available with this technology. Some are computerized voices but most are real narrations by a human reader.

4. Mad Libs. This app allows students to create their own stories by filling in the blanks (these blanks can range from selected adjectives, adverbs, etc). This is a fun way for students to use their grammatical knowledge.

5. Newsela. This website generates current events articles for each subject. Every article has 5 versions and they are written for various reading levels. Students can choose which version is best for them., read the article, and then take a comprehensive quiz based off of what they read. Or, teachers can assign an article based off what they are covering in class and talk about how the content connects with current events.

Writing Challenge ($2.99 in the Apple App Store)

“Writing Challenge lets teachers turn creative writing into a game for students. Whether this app is used as for whole-class, small-group, or individual activity, you'll immediately see the potential of this powerful writing tool. Children will be given a writing prompt and a countdown clock. The goal of this challenge is to have students incorporate the prompt into their story before the time is up. As soon as the timer finishes, they'll be given something new to add to their story.”

This is an encouraging way to get students to write, and enjoy doing so. The time limit is motivating, and can even spark some competitiveness between students. The prompts makes the idea of writing original pieces less daunting, and calls for imaginitive thinking as well as innovative work that can be hard to get from students.

Sentence Builder ($5.99 in Apple App Store)

“Building sentences can be tricky; give your kid a leg up with this easy slot machine-esque tool, featuring basic nouns, verbs and articles. Line up the words correctly to match the pictures, and she'll be rewarded by a cheering animated pal. This app is especially great for practice with grammar and connector words, and is appealing for visual learners because of the graphic illustration of how grammar works. Three levels of play are possible and there are many additional settings, allowing the app to grow with your child.”

This app seems beneficial for students when practicing grammar. Grammar is an important part of being an effective writer, and that is something that should be
emphasized. There is also an option for teens with this app (Sentence Builder Teens), which can be helpful to students in high school who must learn to write assignments that have more substance.
